From the Daily News:
Oh, that's comforting: A new audit by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli's office finds the NYC Department of Buildings has "allowed major code violations that could pose immediate and severe threats to life and safety to linger unfixed for months." (Now updated with Buildings Dept. response - see below.)
DiNapoli reports that "A review of 1,206 open violations written in April 2010 showed that 1,063 re-inspections had been performed by December 2010. However, 94% of these inspections did not actually occur until four, five or six months after the citations were written. And when those inspections did take place, inspectors found the conditions had not been corrected and continued to pose an immediate threat in almost half of the cases."
Well, they did get 3 illegal hotels in Manhattan to shut down!

The only way out of this big government failure is local government.
If Queens had it's own DOB, they might not be so capricious.
I haven't read the report yet but Super Halal Meat at 253-06 Hillside Avenue is a great example of the Buildings Department lack of enforcement and follow up. Look at the Buildings Department web site. This building has numerous violations that need to be corrected. The building is a safety and fire hazard that the Buildings Department refuses to address. They have walked away fromt this mess and claim they don't have the authority to do anything else.
No Shit 43-31 Bowne street 50+ people in a 2 family house .....
The Mayor and City Council need to change the laws. Until that happens the Buildings Department is a joke and every law breaking building owner knows it. No matter what the violation is unless it's a very serious safety issue the DOB can't do anything except issue a summons and thats only if they are allowed access to the premises. If the building dosn't let DOB on the premises the complaint gets resolved after the 2nd attempt.
Super Halal Meat 253-06 Hillside Avenue installed a very large and LOUD HVAC unit on its roof. The unit was installed without any permits and still doesn’t have any permits from DOB or the Fire Department. When DOB respond to this complaint the store does not have a ladder for them to use and the DOB doesn’t have ladders. Super Halal Meat will never get another violation for the HVAC unit because they will never let DOB on their roof again.
No shit Sherlock!
So watta ya gonna do about it...
