City agencies looking at Whitestone crossing problem

WOW look at those cars "speeding" by.

Had to wait for two cars!! Oh the horror.

Sorry, but if the news lady can't make it look dangerous then it probably isn't.

She did manage to touch on a real problem though; that the population of the neighborhood is booming.

I like how they ignore the SE corner which you can see behind Mr. Centola in the opening shot. Not only does it have sidewalks and ramps, but it is a shorter crossing distance across 3rd Ave. The logical and safer place to cross. But I guess they think the people of Whitestone are too simple to figure that out.

It's about time! Is this what it always takes to get action, a leader like Centola has to come forward to lead our elected and appointed officials to the water; but will they drink?

What gives? I point out the ridiculousness of the "news" story and you don't publish it? I didn't knock Mr. Centola or anything. Are you really afraid to post a readers honest assessment of the situation?

Not sure what you're talking about. Yours is the first comment published.

Anyway, your assessment is disingenuous because you and I both know that people are not going to cross 3 streets to get to the park when they can walk in a straight line and get there by crossing one.

Here's an overhead map.

OKay, Let's just say it and get it over with. Al for City Council!

It is there now, it did not appear before. The comment below me was the only comment and the thread showed 1 comment. Blogger sucks.

You are right, no one is going to cross three streets to get across when the can easily and safely walk across one street in a straight line. But is someone is so concerned about their safety, they can cross the fairly narrow side street before they cross, or they can think ahead and approach third avenue from the East side of 147th St. But no, that is not even considered as an alternative (even an inconvenient one), instead it is "how would someone possibly get across?"
If people were really having difficulty crossing, don't you think the news lady would be able to capture that on camera to make her story better? Heavy traffic even? Instead she blatantly exaggerates/lies about the cars passing her, saying they are speeding by, and makes like it is a big deal to have to wait for two cars to pass before she can cross.

I should also mention I spent plenty of time around that park as a kid and crossing was never an issue.

You do realize they did a bogus survey on converting 5th avenue into a one way westbound. The survey stressed the inconvenience of traveling an extra block or two to get to the other avenues and people who voted against the change (who don't even live on the block) felt obliged to write in on the survey that it would be an inconvenience. So you tell me!

Also this does not take away from the fact that there are no crosswalks, signs or any other traffic measure for the entire length of that park and a couple of miles up. That on top of the fact that there is no sidewalk on the side of the street where the people would be coming from.

What about the fact that the story was done in the late afternoon, on a rainy weekday. Check it out on the Weekends, after 4 on weekdays, and anytime during the weekends.

All these people want is some sort of traffic measure to protect children and you want to insult and belittle that request. why?

Do you also notice how the roadway expands at that point? Not as safe as you allude too. Check it out yourself.

Times change, how many years ago was that? where were you coming from? How many homes were in the area? How many homes had children? How many children were in that area?

There are at least 500 new homes with children in the community within the last 10 years alone.

Its not about waiting for 2,3,4 or 50 cars to cross. The point is that in front of a park, for at least 3 blocks of its frontage, there are no sidewalks across the street, and no type of safety measures getting there. That is the point, plain and simple. For the record Greater Whitestone were the ones that got DOT to agree to put speed bumps along the avenue in front of the park. As usual, DOT lied and they did nothing more about it. Who ever gets it done is not the issue, gettig it done is.

You go Mr. Centola, your neighbors thank you, and our children thank you.

you damn fuckin' civic bastards, give the man a break. He is pointing out a potential problem, bringing it to the attention of the press and people that can correct it. For over fifty years you sat on your asses and did nothing, now you have new civics in Whitestone waking your fat asses up. sorry,to little to late.

Where's Dan Halloaran ?

Anonymous said...

Didn't you read his statement? He is "working with the civics" , basically once again doing nothing.
He is useless, DOT has agreed to bumps and stop signs and he can't get them to keep their commitment.

USELESS!! AND WAIT TILL VALLONE GETS IN.... TIME TO MOVE OUT.

Give a man a keyboard,WOW! you people are outthere. This story is about preventing a problem that is it, This man has done the right thing and we thank you.

HALLORAN THAT IS, JUST IN CASE IT WASN'T OBVIOUS.

Halloran doesn't have press conferences every dawn to take credit for the sunrise (like his predecessor does.)

So Queens DOT isn't reacting at rocket speed to this situation... Nobody's gonna stop the presses for that one.

So what exactly are you saying?

Queens DOT is waiting for the inevitable tragedy so Maura McCarthy and Dan Halloran can stand at that street corner and do the hand ringing act!
