Democratic congressional candidate and State Assemblymember David Weprin has withdrawn from tonight’s scheduled debate with his GOP rival, Bob Turner. The two men are locked in a tough contest to succeed Anthony Weiner in the Ninth Congressional District in Brooklyn and Queens.
Robert Holden president of the Juniper Park Civic Association, cosponsor of the debate, said he checked in with Weprin’s campaign earlier today and was told “logistics” would make it impossible for Weprin to appear in Middle Village tonight.
“The hurricane caused major logistical and scheduling problems for the campaign and thus David is not able to make the debate this evening,” Weprin campaign spokesperson, Liz Kerr said in an emailed statement.
Holden, though, was not accepting the hurricane as a reason for Weprin’s change in plans. “This stinks to high heaven,” Holden said.
He said the candidate’s people had been voicing concern about the debate for the past week, expressing fear it could get disorderly and pressing for a forum instead of an actual debate. Holden said he had promised that the debate would be well run – no placards allowed and some police on hand – but he added, “I can’t guarantee you’re not going to get tough questions.”
The cancellation “is going to backfire for Weprin big time, “Holden said. “Anybody who would do this would not be a straight shooter in Congress.”

Maureen Walthers, publisher of the Queens weekly, called Weprin a “coward” and a “worm” for being a no-show.
“What is he afraid of?” she asked. “Stand up and answer the questions!”
“I hope Weprin doesn’t win,” she said. “Shame on him. He’s making Weiner look good.”

Last year they stopped nearly every debate between moron Ed Braunstein and his smarter Democratic rivals and then again against Republican Vincent Tabone. They had to hide the fact that Braunstein is a special interest owned idiot.
The Hurricane excuse is BS. If it were a fund raiser for him, he'd be there.
I live in Sheepshead Bay , and I was on the fence, but now I defintely voting for Turner.
The problem is he's probably on a tropical island vacation and can't get back to NYC for the debate because the airports are closed.
I'm not sure though what would be worse - admitting to not being in town or admitting to being afraid. At least if he was out of town on some sort of 'business trip' and could prove it, offering to reschedule, it would look more tolerable...

I'm a registered active democrat voter and I haven't received one piece of mail from weprin. I'm not voting for him. turner has my vote this time around
I've received about 10 pieces of mail from Weprin. Better check up on your mailman. A few years ago I caught my mailman dumping a housing info mailing from our Councilwoman. 500 of them dumped.
Weprin doesn't have to debate. The Teachers' Union as well as the other unions, gay activists, and the board of elections, will make sure that he wins.
he gets more free publicity this way. Weprin is NOT dumb. he was the only council member to go up against Bloomberg and defeated Bloomie's plan to charge drivers to enter Manhattan anywhere below 96th Street.
Weprin would have made a much better comptroller than John Lui. He has experience in the banking commission.

Weprin is a wimp. I'm voting for Turner. However, if Turner wins, watch the powers that be eradicate his seat because of the census count. Isn't this Weiner's seat? Why have an expensive election if they are getting rid of the seat anyway?

State Assembly member David Weprin was seen at Queensborough Community College Friday night checking out the storm prep work for hurricane Irene. I even saw his staff members take photos of him with the OEM staff. He cared enough to be out checking on his constituents well being.
He was also seen at a synagogue hobnobbing last night when he was supposed to be at the debate. I guess he's no friend to Gentiles.
