In the same time it took for any of these people to write letters to DOT and Parks Dept., and to sit for an interview, if they would grab a rag and a can of Brasso, the plaque would be back to new. Big phonies. They don't care about the monument or the families on there... they just want their media moment! How great if the citizens would just see that jerkoff in a pair of sweats and a tshirt on a saturday afternoon shining it himself.
Anon2: Fortunately, the people of Douglaston are smarter than you or the well-meaning boobs who obliterated 10,000 year-old cave paintings in France a while back. Locals already clean that triangle and even mow the lawn at the LIRR station because MTA doesn't do it regularly.
What exactly do you expect the City to do? Raise taxes to go do some multi-million dollar restoration of this? No thanks! How about some patriotic retirees getting up off the couch and taking pride in their neighborhood? Thanks! A taxpayer.
Why restore or clean it? Maybe because if they had't givem their lives, you might not be sitting behind your keyboard.Yo'd be sitting behind bars.........fuck you,taxpayer..........

Why your neighborhood is full of Queens Crap
"The difference between dishonest and honest graft: for dishonest graft one worked solely for one's own interests, while for honest graft one pursued the interests of one's party, one's state, and one's personal interests all together." - George Washington Plunkitt

Monuments like that need a lot more TLC than a can of Brasso.
