Should city pay for damage caused by potholes?

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – If your car was damaged from the thousands of potholes across New York City, the city council says you shouldn’t have to pay for repairs.

With the harsh winter we’ve had, banging in and out of potholes is a regular occurrence. If your car is damaged from one of the potholes in the city, should the city pay for damages? One councilmember says yes.

“If your car is damaged due to a pothole I want you to report that to the city and I want you to put a claim into the comptroller’s office because if that pothole was previously reported you may have a successful claim,” said City Councilmember Jim Vacca.

If there is proof the pothole wasn’t filled during a specified time period, the city should be liable for the damages to your car, said Vacca.

why should I as a taxpayer pay for someone else's bad driving! Don't drive if you can't see a crater in the street - slow down, drive over it, around it. If you can't do this - then you shouldn't be driving.

Yes, the city absolutely should. Too many streets have too many potholes to avoid, or avoiding one would cause a collision with another vehicle. The city needs to do their repairs much quicker. Ha. City + quickly. On what planet?

If the city had to pay millions in claims this may get them to actually get a bigger pothole tema and fix them timely. In rain, you cannot see the pothole or guage how deep it is.

He should receive a ticket for not wearing his seat belt and allocate that to fixing the pot holes.

One main cause of potholes is the poor repair job utilities (Con Ed, telephone, etc.) do after digging a street. We've all seen it.
They fill the digged holes half-hazardly, and when snow comes, the melted water and salts seep in, causing the potholes.
The utilities should be held acoountable for the repairs, and they never are.

Can someone tell Greg Mocker he fails at being on the trail of anything different every time?

The Mocker rock star different schtick is getting so boring, a waste of valuable air time that goes nowhere.
We get Mocker, we know there are pot holes but give us some interesting news we can use for a change.

I'd rather watch Mocker than some lame reporter fawning over Bloomberg.

Sure– because he follows crap and is a complainer.

pothole alley = 21 street northbound, from 49th ave. to Jackson ave. a heavily traveled road from the midtown tunnel ,and the entrance also.

after one month on 311 report ,it was smeared with asphalt. the rain has washed the asphalt away since.

the road is dangerous to vehicles.

emergency attention must be paid to this location.

the hell with more bike lanes.....

What has he ever complained about? He asks questions and holds politicians accountable. I'd say that was admirable.

A complainer complaining that someone else is a complainer is kind of funny. And if you don't like the tone of this blog, don't read it.

Of course that pot hole is responsible for your car's damage - yes the city should pay up!
