From Fox 5:New York state is bringing back its sales tax exemption on clothes and shoes, but it will be for items costing only half as much as under previous exemption periods.
Clothes and shoes costing less than $55 per item will be exempt from the state's 4 percent sales tax from April 1 through March 31, 2012. The state's prior sales tax exemption was for clothes and footwear selling for less than $110 per item. That exemption will be restored on April 1, 2012.

There is nothing wrong with the amounts - bring the tax incentives on - watch the smart retailers tailor their products to price just under the exemption. This is excellent. Now get Walmart in the area to provide all the shoes and clothing under those price points, competition is good!

The even playing field is a thing of the past unfortunately.
Years ago antitrust laws were passed that decreed that no single corporation could exist without some form of competition. Monopolies were broken up, and the playing field was leveled so that newcomers would have a fighting chance at getting off the ground.
Today, monopolies are still illegal but I think people will agree that when it comes to entry-level competition, the playing field is far from level. Even though the huge chain companies out there don't technically own the entire market, they dominate so much of it they pretty much eliminate any hope of ever successfully competing with them.
