Another tennis stadium at Flushing Meadows
From the
NY Post:
The Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, the site of the US Open, will get a brand-new 3,000-seat stadium to complement its three existing arenas, the United States Tennis Association said.
The Parks Department refused to release the preliminary designs for the new facility, but said it wouldn't require any public money and would not change the current borders beyond the 46.5 acres the tennis center already has.
It's unclear if any of the 30 public courts would be bulldozed to make room for the new facility.
The USTA pays the city about $1.5 million a year to rent the park space. The stadiums, except for the US Open and a handful of other tennis matches, sit empty the rest of the year.

As I recall, the deal USTA made with Dinkins was for $250,000 a year for 25 years. Am I correct?
Does the new stadium come pre-approved by CB7?
1.5M for 50 acres??? What a deal.
First Shea, now this? I can't keep up!!!

SHAME!
Wait wait wait.. they make all the money that they make and the city only gets $1.5 mil for rent? This is a joke right...
"When the U.S. Open moved to Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, N.Y., the USTA orchestrated a 99-year lease that fines New York for unnecessary flyovers by jets taking off from nearby LaGuardia Airport. Under the lease, the city is liable for up to $325,000 if planes disrupt the tournament. Then-New York Mayor David Dinkins was the architect of the lease - which has been credited with making the stadium possible - and who prompted John McEnroe to dub him "the best mayor for tennis."

And why isn't this money being used to fix up the NYS Pavilion?
The USTA has great programs for kids - mine has used affordable tennis programs for years - sponsors free programs around the city at tennis areas in city parks etc for all children and employs kids in summer month camps.
Adults can also affordable play tennis via their programs usually 8-10 weeks. People from all over the tristate bring their children here.

Becauze I zaid zo!!!
What kind of idiot plays Tennis ?
The NYPD overtime and remote station equipment for the US Open alone must exceed the $1.5 million the USTA pays yearly in rent.
What a sweet deal for the USTA being a taxpayer subsidized corporation.
Meanwhile the Unisphere fountains are off 50 weeks a year...passed out hobos and mental vagrants pee and crap their pants on all the park benches.
The Westinghouse time capsule monument is also used as a toilet
Doesn't Jack, the hubby of Marilyn Bitterman have free access to USTA events?
And why, if so?
Didn't politically connected Sid Davidoff's law firm represent the USTA?
Is Sid Davidoff's law firm currently representing "Whitehouse Restaurant" owner Joey Franco?
Didn't Sid Davidoff's law firm represent that notorious criminal Tommy Huang?
H-m-m-m-m!
