Sexless living in LIC

From the Village Voice:

Location: Long Island City, Queens
Rent: $3,000 a month/$600 per person
Size: 3,500 square feet (industrial loft)
Occupants: Tanya Horo (musician), Tim Maybury (bartender/guitarist), David Benge (band manager/tour coordinator), Lani Terry (graphic designer)

The first thing people ask about the Sherlock's Daughter loft is: How do you handle carnal affairs? A fair question, given that none of the bedroom walls reach the ceiling. The answer is: You don't.

Actually, the first question that came to my mind was: Is it legal for people to have created a commune inside a factory? The second question that came to mind was why didn't the Voice ask my first question?

Buncha goddamn "We're so friggin' cute how can you NOT love us" hipsters that's why the voice didn't ask your first question. Plus the fact they're doing it in Queens (Bridge and Tunnel People).

What the voice said about Sherlocks Daughter in their Review in April of 2010

"Sherlock's Daughter is New York's newest, awesomest band--"newest" as in, "they just moved here a few weeks ago." Freshly imported from Sydney, Australia, Sherlock's Daughter employ lush, speckled, swooping, diving slurpscapes that echo the snuggle-crackle of bands like Animal Collective and Broadcast, but with a poppier streak that aligns them with the sunniest of nu-indie. After spending a handful of years toiling in the Aussie underground, the entire band simply packed up and made the move over here after being invited to SXSW. The four boys now live together, commune-style, in a Bushwick loft and frontwoman Tanya Horo resides in "an Olympic swimming pool in Long Island City," adding, "It needs a clean, but it's pretty cool." The band's five-song EP came out last August. Its first single, "Kids," is a glorious rush, full of distended noises, circuit-bent tweedles, joyous stomps and--of course--a massive, harmony-soaked chorus. Here's to hoping they play with tons of shows with their new, like-minded neighbors Bear In Heaven, Dinosaur Feathers, and Twin Sister."

Someone at the voice is screwing someone in the band. But NOT in the Illegal loft is what I'm guessing

Not bad - a refreshing change from Parkside, Claire, and headlines screaming in unison that a few dozen Egyptians protesting Murbarak was the greatest thing to happen for a few million Queensites in the past week.

A refreshing change indeed...welcome to what is happening in the rest of the city Bayside, Elmhurst, Woodhaven ....

Thank you. I'm holding my own...literally!

It's nice to know what marginally attractive white people with pale, doughy skin do in LIC.

Tanya Horo (musician), Tim Maybury (bartender/guitarist), David Benge (band manager/tour coordinator), Lani Terry (graphic designer).

In other words, they're trustfunders.

Anonymous said...

so 3rd world types are heros? mabye queens needs more trust fund babies - will not be so polite, doormats, willing to put up with the 3rd stringers that the rest of you have put up with in the past generatoin of so?

look what they did to lower east side, downtown brooklyn.

you could be so lucky.

trustfunders...hahahahaha...one of their families probably owns the whole building.

Hey! It's HARD to get in on that living space. You have to be a master debater!

I always like how Queens residents, who are mute when it comes to losers like their electeds and community board, are very very sure they don't want hipsters.

What they really don't want is the bar to be off the floor a few inches.

They will be broke in no time playing original music.
Road manager ?
For what playing a set at some sh*thole Brooklyn or Jerzee bar for $30 ?

In 2011 all the record company's create artists -not sign them.
A band has such a slim chance at getting a good paying contract they are better off trying ti hit the the NYS lottery.
Make that zero if a band member is over 25.

The Voice's review is one of the worst crock's of Sh*t I ever read in music.
"lush, speckled, swooping, diving slurpscapes that echo the snuggle-crackle with a poppier streak that aligns them with the sunniest of nu-indie"
Now thats worthy of first place ob the Audiophile bullshit page !

Q How do you make a million bucks in an indie rock band?

A: FIrst you start with two million bucks........

Joe said...

Why would an Australian band come to America in the first place.

The Entertainment industry in America is just as corrupt as its politics.
The biggest non corporate stage in NYC is the Bowery Ballroom. (and Ron Delsners family now have that locked up)
Clear Channel, Nokia, and the Corporations have everybody locked out unless yo make them a partner plus buy million dollar promotional services packages from select "middlemen" (so they can pretend).

These kids are talented no doubt but play where? Arline Grocery, The Bitter end ?
Those places don't pay.
This band has be given some VERY bad financial and career advice.

Anyone have the address so we can lookup the C of O?

That looks like the old Horowitz & Margareten matzoh factory on Review & Van Dam.
I was the Engineer at Roxie Studios across the street ages ago. We mic'd up some drums on one of those HUGE floors. I recognize those windows and ceiling.
Im pretty sure

Where do they make the matzohs now? In Mexico??

I think in Brooklyn.
My Jewish friend Jezkfeld got some fantastic apple cider ones in Great Neck.
--this ancent Jewish deli up north on Baker hill by the post office. Its perhaps the last one left Great Neck is shot

Beautiful place, beautiful people - wtf is the problem here - I don't get it . . .

BTW - indie makes great money - simply by BEING on the internet . . .

who cares how or where they're going to do it perv? they've got it all figured out I'm sure.

Anonymous said...

Simply being on the internet does not make money. Since when does giving music away for free make money? Perhaps a re-use of their music in a movie or on greys anatomy will get them a check. But that's about it. Mostly they get money from the folks or work a dumb job.

Babs said...

I know what he/she means - the indie groups on Youtube whatever are making money - the more popular they are - the more money they make because of the ads OR because people are buying their CDs from the internet.

It's a brave new world ya' know Joe.

Justin Beiber was indie i.e. someone who became famous from some way OTHER than through BIG BUSINESS or the music industry.

Universal Music Group is indie??? That's a pretty big indie. No they make nothing off of youtube ads. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Babs said...

sorry to burst yours - his mother originally put his video on youtube - he WAS Indie.

stop being so friggin' jealous - these people are harming exactly WHO? and doing exactly WHAT wrong? Bunch of hip people who are unrelated are living together - they formed their own "family" unit - wtf do you care anyway?

Queens Crapper said...

They are living in what likely is an unsafe and definitely illegal environment. That's all I care about.

Joe said...

Beiber is a joke. The kid never wrote a song is his life.
He sang Karaoke on you tube
Universal has perhaps a team of 100 people marketing, writing and recording songs (they own the publishing to) for him.

No different the what Bob Rafelson, Bert Schneider and Don Kirshner did with Davie Jones and the Monkee's 40 years ago.
I spent 10 years in that crap corrupt hord Semitic run industry. I got out of it just in time and never signed over any publishing. Now its mandatory to give away 95% of your points if you want to get the FM radio airplay and the promo needed for success.
(the same conglomerates own all the billboards, radio, TV stations an major concert venues)
Its that or like said here spend 2 million of your own or some investors $$$ to make 1 million wile filing for bankruptcy. Like those girls who sang "Dont Go Chasing Waterfalls" and countless others

Beiber will be on the Last Train to Clarksville by age 25 just like Britney, Jones, Tork, Cassady, Garrett, Billy Ray and all the rest of them thrown in the garbage as soon as they hit 25.
---and he wont see a penny of royalty's for those songs (they are not his)nor be licensed to perform them.
That's reality of music today and the way the industry is setup.

---American Idols my ass, those people are SLAVES to 50 layers of contracts!!

J. Beiber must be a decent young man. the Post ran a photo of him running the court in a N.B.A. celebrity B/B game . he scored eight points. and was awarded a honorable mention.

he may do well in the film world, after he collects some revenue from the teenie -boppers.

read "the mob and me" by tommy james(the shondells). "mony mony","crystal blue persuasion", "hanky panky"

he told me that he named the song "Mony Mony",after viewing the flashing Mutual of N.Y. neon sign from his hotel room on Seventh Avenue @ 57 street.

they stole his earnings.

Good story Joe - AND that's EXACTLY why indie music is so popular right now - the INDUSTRY is not involved initially or at all depending on how rich you want to become - the ball is in your court.

I'm not a Beiber fac - but, I'm also not 12 years old.

I have always despised Kirshner and the like - on the other hand I LOVED Bill Graham - he did the right thing by the musicians and fans.

Babs said...

also - BTW did you notice that Beiber music is very "clean" i.e. no mention of "ho's" etc. - very anti-music moguls like Simmons and the other guy.

He brought the industry down single handedly.

Anonymous said...

Well, Queens-born Lou Pearlman sure made an impact on the music industry. Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, and a $500 million Ponzi scheme. Queens is very proud!

"the mob and me" by tommy james(the shondells).
Read it, heard all the story's and more and believe it's all true

I remember Kenny Laguna and was involved with the early auditions and rehearsals to create Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.
It (the band) started at Roxie studios on Review ave in LIC. (the back Studio D to be exact, there was a pool table and 1950's Seeberg Jukebox with "Blue Cheer and "T-Rex" songs that still took dimes everybody played back there)
(Thats about 200 feet from where that band is living).

Kenny L's a genius BTW who seen it all and don't take "No stinkin boosh*t from nobody".
PS: Check out some of the re-recorded tracks on "The Runaways" movie on cable and FIOS this month.

Babs K*rshner was a POS so is Dick Cl*rk is another scoundrel who made himself millions bamboozling, exploiting and pimping other peoples hard work.
Countless artists had to fork over publishing and performance rights (or be blacklisted) once involved with his shows to then be paid peanuts or nothing.

Expect warm weather when that sac of shit croaks because the gates of hell will be opening once again.
