From the Times Newsweekly:
A 58-year-old man who taught at Aviation Career and Technical Education High School in Long Island City for over 20 years has been charged with sexually abusing a female student at the school between December 2008 and January 2009.
George Zola, of Valley Stream, L.I., has been charged with first-degree attempted sexual abuse, third degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
If convicted, Zola, who has taught shop classes at the school, located at 45-30 36th St. in Long Island City, for 22 years and is presently assigned to administrative duties, faces up to four years in prison.
According to the criminal charges, Zola sexually abused one of his female students on multiple occasions by inappropriately touching her breasts, buttocks and vagina over and under her clothing, rubbing his body against hers or taking her hand and forcing her to touch him. On at least one occasion, Zola allegedly told the student, who was 16 at the time, “This is how it’s gonna be.”
The incidents allegedly occurred inside the school between Dec. 1, 2008, and Jan. 22, 2009.
The case came to light when the student informed a school guidance counselor about the alleged abuse in June 2010.
On a related note, Senator Tony Avella is trying to close a loophole in the sex offender laws.

He's going to see "How it's going to be" real soon when angry prisoners who haven't seen their wives and children in years teach him.
I hope he enjoys the lesson. He won't be sitting down after he gets it either. And he better coordinate his clothing to match black and blue.
You should refrain from calling him a "perv" until he has been proven guilty.
@Roger: It's a blog, not a news report really, so there's no rules or need to be fair and balanced. I agree that's kind of unfair to call him that since he hasn't been found guilty yet, but that's freedom of speech for you. If he is guilty, he might as well get in a plane and crash rather than suffer through the shit they'll put him through.
22years? Thats a long time before turning into an abuser????? Any priors????
You should refrain from calling him a "perv" until he has been proven guilty.
OK "Roger"!
Are these acceptable?:
"Alleged pervert"
"Accused pervert"
Many times in a High School setting, students make allegations against teachers for many reasons. A large percentage of the time the allegations are unfoundeed, or the students within a few years of graduation retract their allegations, and admit to doing so because they were "mad" at the teacher or a vast amount of other reasons. There is never a follow up news story when that happens.
No, I do not know this guy and if he did it they should castrate him in public.
All I ask is that their be some balance when reporting these stories.
Also, notice how when any Public Unions contract expires, is exprired, or about to expire, they are "mediad" as villans?
Again if he did it, castrate him in public and have the girls family do it. Or, I would volunteer immediately.
Wait a minute...
Girls actually go to that school?!?
Any news yet on what will happen to him?
I used to go to Aviation and had this guy for a semester and I would say I am not entirely surprised by this allegation. The guy always was a little skeevy to me. This is not the first time this has happened at AV either.
It's tough because it really is a pretty good school and most of the teachers are top flight people.
There is always going to be a bad apple.
The reason I asked before on what might happen to him is because I also went to Aviation. Went there for five years, and Zola was a favorite teacher. He wouldn't seem to be the type to do something like that. I guess we'll see.
Mr. Zola was a teacher of mine and these charges seem totally out of character, and in my opinion are probably false. The real question is why did the alleged victim wait a year and a half to report the alleged abuse. Sexual crimes are some of the most horrific crimes, and false sexual assault allegations, which are becoming way too common, make it much harder for the real victims to achieve justice.
I too really liked Zolla. I am proud to say he has been acquitted of all charges: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/queens/jury_acquits_queens_teacher_of_molesting_zGqmeGe46LjVCC6Z8rjWhP?utm_medium=rss&utm_content=Queens
...but of course the newspapers will not make as big a deal that he is innocent...
