Bay Terrace wants to secede from CB7

From the Times Ledger:

Bay Terrace Community Alliance members unanimously threw their support behind a declaration of independence that the group unveiled last week, calling for them to separate from Community Board 7 and join CB 11.

The Bay Terrace residents said at their Dec. 8 meeting at the Benenson Family Center of the Chabad of Northeast at 212-12 26th Ave. in Bayside that they wanted to join CB 11 because they felt closer geographically and culturally to the area represented by CB 11 than to CB 7. A number of the members stressed the move was important because they then would be covered by the 111th Precinct, which is physically closer to them than the 109th Precinct, which now has jurisdiction over Bay Terrace.

“CB 7 is a really hardworking board,” said Warren Schreiber, the BTCA president. “They have terrific, dedicated members, but it’s not where we belong.”

The 200-acre section of northeast Queens between 26th Avenue and Fort Totten was originally considered part of Bayside, but it has long been a part of CB 7 despite its being far closer to Bayside and Little Neck than to CB 7’s hub in Flushing. Bay Terrace is also near Whitestone, which is a part of CB 7.

CB 7 covers Flushing, Whitestone, College Point, Murray Hill and Bay Terrace, while CB 11 includes Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, Hollis Hills and Oakland Gardens. The two boards share Auburndale.

The declaration of independence, which BTCA members voted to adopt, revealed at last week’s meeting, begins in a familiar way.

“We, the people of Bay Terrace, hereby declare our rights as residents of the community of Bayside, Queens,” the document reads.

The declaration goes on to say that Bay Terrace has “always been part of the historical, geographical, governmental, social and religious fabric of the community of Bayside,” and residents have “been forced to remain within Community Board 7 against our will.”

The document states that police response time could decrease should Bay Terrace be covered by the 111th Precinct.

As far as I'am concerned, they can do as they please.

But let's get real here, this statement underlines the real motive:

"they wanted to join CB 11 because they felt closer geographically and culturally to the area represented by CB 11 than to CB 7"

I know that area well and the increasing Asian-ization is the core issue here.

Again, it's their issue -not mine. But is is a rather obvious circling of the wagons, in the face of change.

Being in the 111 and not the 109 would not make a difference in response times. There would not be more of a police presence.

Cops are out on patrol all the time, they don't leave from the station like the fire dept does when it gets a call therefore being closer to the station house does nothing but makes for an easier commute to pickup accident reports.

These people are morons promoting these false ideas of better safety and security in CB11 v CB7.

THE AREA IS JUST ABOUT ALL ASIAN NOW ANYWAY..STARTED 30 YEARS AGO..THE JEWS AND ITALIANS WENT TO FLORIDA A LOOOOOOOONG TIME AGO.

It's about where their property value is associated with: Flushing or Bayside. I'd want to be with Bayside too.

It's good to see Kelty, Apelian and Bitter Marilyn commenting.

Anyone familiar with CB 11 will know they represent a diverse population made up of many different religious, racial and ethnic groups.

It's all about property value and perception. There aren't many asians in Bay Terrace, so they don't want to be confused with the scum in Flushing.

Hmmmmmm...............

Wonder which board is more corrupt?

Board 7, without a doubt.

Then perhaps the motivation isn't just racial prejudice? If I had a choice, I'd avoid #7 like the plague. They sure like to bend over and take it from Bloomberg's cronies. Willets Point and Flushing Commons are prime examples!

Warren schreiber means well he realy does but I don't see the change getting done. It would require a lot of political capital. Bay terrace does not have the clout with new york city government. The reason being is that the bat terrace alliance has invested a lot of time and energy into the staviskys. Thus she should be the one that makes it happen. The problem is that every elected official only has so much political capital. You can only go to the well so many times. What ever clout the staviskys have must be used on evans clients. If this was harlem charlie rangel would get it done. If this was the throggs neck in the bronx klein would get it done. If this was bushwick in brooklyn vito lopez would get it done. However this is bay terrace in queens and the staviskys must preserve all their clout for evans' clients

yes it is sad when politicos build a fiefdom off the backs of the people who support them

Malba which is far wealthier than apartment laden Bay Terrace is in CB7. Not one Malba resident objects to being placed in CB7.

Obviously the people in Bay Terrace have a inferiority complex.I can tell by their fits that there not rich.

LOSERS!!

Judging by the all-white Bay Terrace group featured with Schreiber, it's obvious that they don't belong in the multi-ethnic, multi-racial CB 7.

why does this have to be about race? isn't overdevelopment a concern?

Anonymous said...

What a shallow, race-baiting bunch of assholes you all are.

Race is not a consideration in this.
The section of Flushing nearest to Bay Terrace is still primarily White.
CB7's board is still primarily White.
Bay Terrace is simply part of Bayside, and has historically been so since the 1800's. There no reason except for (former) population requirements that it became part of CB7 and finally, a sound movement has begun to correct that wrong.

Warren is correct, CB 7 is too inundated with Flushing to adequately deal with neighborhoods like Bay Terrace. We have proposed a new smaller board that would include : Malba, Malba Gardens, Beechhurst, Whitestone, Bay Terrace and similar communities.

Where do we get information about the steps that Bay Terrace must take, to be removed from CB7 and incorporated into CB11 (or new, smaller CB as has also been suggested)? How feasible is this? At the web site of BTCA, there is no information about the steps being taken or how the change can be accomplished. It is difficult for people to help, if we do not know what the procedure is.

which nyc councilmen provided thousands of taxpayer dollars to pay for the Chabad property a few years ago ?
is not there separation of church and state?

CB 11 is plenty multi racial.
Asians, Whites, Blacks, Hispanics abound in all areas covered by CB 11, I should know, I have lived here for 25 years.

What accounts for about a third of the corruption in CB#7 is Appelian and Kelty.

They're the ones who are responsible for continually selling out downtown Flushing!

The you have the rest of that "alta kakka" (old shits) bored!

Anonymous said...

aren't appelian and vallone one in the same?

Police response times are slow enough, they don't need another area to cover. And don't forget Bay Terrace is School district 25 (Flushing) not District 26. Is changing school districts next on their list.

above ^^^

The 111th Precinct in Bayside is closer to Bay Terrace than the one in Flushing.

Here's my two cents on this. Just liek how Bayside Hills refuses to have their address bear the name Flushing or Oakland Gardens, bay Terrace is doign the same. Why? it's self explanatory! (DUH IT's FLUSHING) And this is coming from an Asian kid reigning from QB Hill. THere are racist white ppl near/in my neighborhood and I accept that! (fact of life) but in this situation, I don't think you guys should throw race in b/c even if they go to CB 11, it doesn't mean us asians will be segregated and forbidden to move in to BAy Terrace. I feel they should go to CB11 primarily b/c CB7 deals more with urban-business oriented flushing than suburban Bay terrace.

I am a life long resident of BT. My mail is adddressed to Bayside, when people ask where I live I say Bayside, not Whitestone, not Flushing. I have never understood why we are in CB7 or why our schools are in Dist 25 when schools just blocks away are in 26, a higher rated district. I rarely see patrol cars and recently had the misfortune of of having to go all the way to downtown Flushing to the 109 to file a theft report because I was told it could be hours before a patrol car could come to my home because it was a not an emergency. Local precinct my a&%. Just being switched to the 111 would make a huge difference. Anyone who says differently does not live here.
