119 violations is not that big of a deal...

From SI Live:

Tamika Haney, 35, is no longer sure who owns the two-and-a-half-story house at 151 Hendricks Ave. in New Brighton, where she lives on the second floor with her nine children, ranging in age from 1 to 19 years old.

She moved there in April 2005 from a shelter in Brooklyn. She said, “The city gave me a list of apartments, and this was one of them.”

Over the past five years, conditions in the house have deteriorated significantly.

“The basement is filled with raw sewage,” Ms. Haney said. “The smell is horrible, and my kids and I are breathing in this stuff.

“There are holes in the ceiling and floor, and squirrels come inside. I don’t have an oven — it’s been broken for four years. The kitchen sink doesn’t work — I have to wash my dishes in the bathroom tub.”

The city’s Department of Finance lists the building’s owner as Angelito Chuakay, who has a mailing address in Secaucus, N.J. Ms. Haney confirmed he was her landlord, but said he and his wife, Aurea, have not returned any of her telephone calls recently.

Public records of the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) show 119 open violations at 151 Hendricks Ave., 96 of them listed as Class B, meaning hazardous.

An HPD inspection last month documented a collapsing ceiling in Ms. Haney’s living room, a hole in the kitchen ceiling, a broken pipe in the kitchen sink, vermin throughout the apartment and raw sewage in the basement, among other violations.

An earlier inspection in August found exposed electrical wiring, a sagging bathroom floor and doors that created rooms within bedrooms.

When an HPD inspector visited the building in March, flies, roaches and mice were noted throughout the building; electrical wiring was exposed in the basement; there was a leaking pipe in Ms. Haney’s kitchen, and no smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, as required by law.

She is also concerned that the building may have been illegally converted from a one-family to a two-family house. “On the first floor, there’s just a piece of sheetrock that separates the downstairs apartment from the upstairs,” she said.

Get a job, move out, and stop spreading your legs and pushing out more welfare sucker babies.

Take the house away from that landlord if he's too overwhelmed to take care of it.

Hey Anonymous....doesn't matter what a person's financial situation is, no one should have to live that way. Just remember just because you can have it all today, doesn't mean you're going to have it all tomorrow. I'm going to guess you're pro life with your attitude towards all of her children, most pro life expect people to have children even knowing they can't afford it so that later you could all brow beat them, if you are u should be happy she chose to have them. The City should do something about this and should be held accountable if it were me I wouldn't pay my rent till things were fixed.

Pro life doesn't mean anti birth control, but you are right about the conditions of the home. No one deserves to live this way, and the city has no business referring people to slumlords.

I also see a lot of dirt and garbage piled up there.

Is the lanlord sneaking in at night and making the place a mess, or is the tennant living like an animal???

Queens Crapper said...

I see ceiling tiles on the floor. What are you looking at?

Anonymous said...

No one deserves to live that way - true. And the city has no business referring her to a slum lord - true. So what gets fixed first? What do you do with a single mom with all those "kids" - one of whom is an adult - and what do you do with the slumlord? How did the slumlord get this hosue lsited as being eligible for city tenants?

The city under Bloomberg has been notorious for pushing people out of homeless shelters into illegal flophouses and sub standard housing like this.

How can they say with a straight face they are unaware when they are the ones who issue the c/o certificates and violations?

Anonymous said...

9 kids?? thats gross....ugh move out of NYC while you still can people, its full of trash!!

Well, I guess part of the problem is our Manhattan elites that know this is going on, and turns a blind eye.

Meanwhile our services get cut while they get subsidized with delux services, tax breaks, and all the city's resouces channeled into their real estate investments.

The rich get rich while we get shit.

Pretty stupid until you realize that the rest of us, watching them play out their empty lives on TV, paying outragous prices to see them in person, are even stupider.

Europeans would never settle for the crap Americans patiently accept.

Its a damn shame that a blog like this is soon going off the air.

No, no one deserves to live that way, but I bet if she were paying for it instead of living on the city's dime she would find a better place to live. If you don't like it, find something better.

No one deserves to live this way, and the city has no business referring people to slumlords.

No, sweetie, I'm anti having more babies than you can afford. She's lived there for more than 5 years, and has a one year old, and I'm sure she's given birth other times since she's lived there. Why should the city pay for her to live anywhere, here or the projects or anywhere else, if she's going to keep adding more babies to the system. Birth control, abortion, sterilization... I don't care how it stops, but it needs to stop. I have one baby. Know why? Because I can't afford more than that. I had my tubes tied. Problem solved. We live in a rental. If it were in that condition, you can bet I'd stop paying my rent and get the fuck out. I'm not rolling in any kind of money. In fact, I've been unemployed for 13 months. Guess what? I get by. I have a husband who does work. I'm guessing Tamika Haney has several, if not nine, different baby daddies, none of whom are in the picture. Her 19 year old hasn't graduated from high school, and she herself likely didn't either, since she was busy pushing out her first little gem when she was 16.

Sorry, not an ounce of sympathy for her.

Queens Crapper said...

Ok, and if this were an 88-year old widow you would feel sympathy. And the house would still be a pig sty because of the slumlord that the city referred her to. So get upset over the conditions and not the tenant. That's not the point of the story.

Anonymous said...

This city is a cash cow. If a landlord has violations and makes no move to correct them within 90 days, the city should seize the property and sell it. Lots of cash for the city if they grow testicles and go after these people. No one should have to live in conditions like that. What about all the senior citizens who are in this situation? It's cruel and needs to be stopped. Turn this problem into a cash win for the city. In the long run it will save the taxpayers money.

9 kids???? what year is this 1749?!?! thats so nasty!! i can assure you we're paying for them, yuck.

Anonymous said...

"So get upset over the conditions and not the tenant. That's not the point of the story."

Respectfully, Senor Crappy, it's hard to separate the two. If she wasn't a single mother on welfare, squeezing out all those kids that she can't afford to support, there wouldn't be a story, because she wouldn't be in welfare housing to start with. And what if she were an "88 year old widow"? If she lives long enough, she will be an 88 year old with 20 kids and 40 grandkids, all on welfare. I agree with you though, the conditions suck and the landlord should be brought to task.

The fact is the majority of women in this country consider child bearing beneath them so we actually need women like this to make up the difference.

Does anyone see a problem with the fact this woman started having kids at approx. 24 years old and hasn't stopped..?

She can't take care of herself, nevermind 9 kids.

How many different fathers do you think there are? And where are they?

And now she's looking to the government to help her cause. Good luck with that. Look where it has gotten her so far.

Poor stupid woman.

The majority? If that were true then we'd have a declining population.

The overriding sentiment expressed in this blog is: WTF? How many kids? Look it's a pity that she lives in a shit hole like that but having that many children & no visible means of supporting them is just plain dumb. I have four kids and I raised them all on my NYC Public school teacher's salary. My late wife was a school social worker. We were done with school when we married and we had jobs. Stop taxing me already to pay for these irresponsible fools. End welfare! Death to the Palestinians, long live Israel. Happy holidays to everyone who's not on the dole!

Anonymous said...

"The majority? If that were true then we'd have a declining population."

The only reason we have a growing population is thanks to all the immigrant women and their first generation offspring.

"NYC Public school teacher's salary"

. . . how about mentioning that you now have one of the BEST pension plans that our society offers today? . . . And OF COURSE it is funded with OUR tax dollars! I personally do not begrudge you your great retirement package - but you are a HOOT to begrudge OTHERS ANYTHING!

YOU are on the DOLE . . . !!!

Sandy Hamilton said...

First problem began when the City placed this woman in illegal housing. If the conditions are this bad the City should withold the rent or collect from the tenant and hold in escrow account. Probably this woman is paying no rent and living free. The landlord has no money flow from this dump to reo-invest. Sounds like this woman added to the mess that was already started when she moved in. For the sake of the children she already has do them a favor and stop having more. No one person can take care of that size family.

Anonymous said...

Your tax dollars are NOT funding their pension; they are. Get your information straight, dear and stop being so jealous. The teachers didnt' get such great salaries in exchange for that pension.

The courts would approve the rent being put in escrow to cure violations and make the place habitable but first the tenant or the city has to take the matter to housing court.

BINGO!

Babs said...

"why 9 kids??"

That does not justify the landlord's violations AND the landlord KNEW EXACTLY what he was getting when he invested in that property. He assumed it was a FREEEEEEE ride -

I wouldn't want this woman as a tenant - but, I wouldn't have made a deal with the City either - in this case - the tenant and the landlord deserve each other.

THAT'S NOT TO SAY of course that she (and her children) shouldn't be treated with dignity.

Babs said...

CITY PENSIONS are paid for by taxpayers - I do not know exactly how much you are getting BUT I would venture to BET it's WELL more than your worth - AND for all we know - you could have been in the good old rubber room for most of those years!

Today's teachers on the other hand - will NOT be given anywhere near the retirement package that you certainly have AND they are working under more stressful conditions.

Babs said...

"Your tax dollars are NOT funding their pension; they are."

get YOUR facts straight - the pensions are paid ONLY IN PART by the employee. NO ONE is jealous as I WILL be receiving a decent package myself one day. I do not begrudge ANYONE from receiving a good pension with the assistance of MY TAXPAYING dollars.

BUT it is very hypocritical of you to begrudge others.

This woman could be mentally ill - as many city workers are - let's be real here - so a little compassion I think is called for.

You Repuks make me laugh. You THINK you did a day's work and for that you THINK you should be given a king's ransom - get real.

This woman - to get through the day - has done more work than most who have regular jobs - Welfare pays for CRAP - it's not the 60s anymore - she can't POSSIBLY be making ends meet.

Sad really that that for some reason the horrible conditions that this poor woman and her children are living in makes YOU feel superior and justified to condemn her.

Babs, you also need to get your facts straight. Taxpayers themselves do not fund the pension system. The only taxpayer funds that might be used would be to pay the employees who administer the pension fund. Didn't you hear, including a lot on this blog, about the "pay to play" scheme that was the downfall of Alan Hevesi? Investments fund pensions, not taxpayers. As you know, teachers have money taken out towards their pensions, at least for part of their careers. What teachers' pensions have to do with women on welfare having many children and then needing assistance is beyond me, but it needed clarification.

Big Hairy Balls said...

Hello Babs,
I have never denied that I have a very good pension. Guess what Babs, I earned it. In the 1970's when I went into teaching there were few takers. I taught math for my entire career. Everything from the basics through calculus. It's quite fashionable today to blame teachers and their pensions for all of society's ills. The reality is most of my friends teased me endlessly about my chosen profession. Now that the economy is in shambles & I have my pension all I hear is envy. Staying with the topic of this particular piece I'll come right out & say it: I don't give a shit about people on welfare. Nine kids and that's my fault? Perhaps a tubal ligation wouldn't have been a bad idea in this case. End welfare! Death to the Palestinians! Long live Israel! Long live my pension, drug, dental & glasses plan. Jealous little troglodytes.

As a matter of fact, no, I wouldn't be sympathetic to her plight, either. I believe in self-supporting. Pity her not planning better for her future.

Babs you old dumbass. Teachers (and cops, and firemen) in this city pay their own salaries in taxes. Any of those positions at top pay are taxed just about the same amount they bring home.

Gee, Babs, the NY Post...such exemplary journalism and a purveyor of facts, some of which they make up. Why isn't the Wall Street Journal being quoted here? Because the Post is a propaganda mouthpiece for all the teacher-bashers and education "reformers". I would have to see the origin of this absurd "$8.60 in taxpayer dollars for every dollar in the pension" as a fact, not just another teacher bashing statement in the Post. That lady shouldn't have had so many kids. It's kids that make you poor. When you're already poor, you should think twice about screwing and having another kid. Notice how the ruling class, Babs, has us workers at one another's throats as our economy declines. We need to unite and fight together for this declining country and reclaim it for us, the real workers, not the so called government and our "leaders".

the 2 topics discussed here actually are related. Its people like this woman with 9 kids that are sucking the city dry of money. She produces nothing for society but 9 kids who will now be a financial strain on the city. without judging her parenting skills, she cant provide the proper resources for these children so most likely they will continue the inner city cycle of poverty/crime/welfare. costing tax payers money for school, food, shelter, legal issues, medical, etc. Now the teacher worked for a living, taking money out of their check every 2 weeks to pay for their retirement, along with contributions from the city. the retirement funds were (and are now for the most part) fully funded until the govt tapped into them to pay for other things. This one single mother will cost the city MANY times more than 1 teacher over the next 20 years due to her 9 kids (and counting) and the resources they use. All of this without contributing anything to society. Meanwhile the teacher went to work for 25 years making some type of positive contribution to nyc(having a job). until this country ends welfare (some public assistance is needed), we will continue to waste money on people like this lady. as for her living condition, f her. have her son go out and buy her an oven.
