Council Member Dan Halloran (R-Whitestone) is co-sponsoring legislation that would change the way the city regulates alternate-side parking laws. The legislation would allow drivers to park on the street once that street has been cleaned by street sweepers.
The current laws are intended to clear streets for regular street cleanings, but they burden and inconvenience drivers who park on the street.
“The inner borough, because of its political influence, often gets to dictate how the rest of us live,” said Halloran. “In Manhattan, where most folks don’t rely on their cars, they have no problem burdening car owners with excessive ticketing and laws restricting where you can park and when. But here in the outer boroughs, we drive. And our current strict alternate-side parking regulations are a needless nuisance.”
Halloran’s northeast Queens district consists largely of one- and two-family houses. Public transit options are few. There are no MTA subway stops in the district, and most residents commute primarily by automobile.
“There is a false perception that drivers in New York City are rich and well-to-do,” said Halloran. “But in my community, most car owners are middle class people, and alternate-side laws affect them the most. Middle class drivers often don't have access to driveways and are forced to park on the street. They have to adjust their lives around the next street cleaning. It takes people away from their jobs and families. And if they forget to move their car, they are hit with costly parking tickets.”
Halloran is one of two cosponsors of the bill from Queens. The legislation, sponsored by Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Manhattan), is currently in the Council’s Transportation Committee.

Actually there are other cosponsors: Council Members Dickens, Fidler, Gentile, Gonzalez, James, Koppell, Mealy, Palma, Williams, Foster, Greenfield, Vann, Vallone, Levin, Lander, and Mark-Viverito.
I was at the Council Committee hearing. Just wanted to clear that up and make sure Halloran didn't get too much recognition.
Sorry, read that fast and didn't see it said one of two from Queens.. My apologies for coming off like an a-hole.
won't work! You'll still get a ticket cause the traffic monkeys will say the sreet hadn't been cleaned when you parked your car.........count on it!
Something has to give - Queens is transit starved in many places then transit rich Manhattan and Halloran is right to push remedies for his areas
Our organization handed Councilman Halloran a bill that was originally proposed by former Councilman Tony Avella. This would get the city off of the Fedral Department of Transportation Guidelines regardeing Traffic Signs such as Stop signs, and the ridiculous amounts of two way traffic needed to have stop signs placed in residential areas. As well as the absurd amount of two way traffic needed in order to convert residential streets into a one way.
500 hundred cars are currently the magic number according to Queens DOT Commissioner Maura McCarthy. Mr. Halloran and Dennis Ring his former Chief of staff refused to comment and or commit to possibly reintroducing this bill with community organizations input.
This was proposed in his District of Whitestone and would be beneficial to all residential communities in the City, that have been assaulted by poor planning and traffic nightmares.

Strange, i've seen places in Manhattan where they allow you to take spots as soon as they sweep. Of course, Queens does not get this luxury.
What if the street sweeper never comes? Happens all the time where I live.
Did Dan get another ticket?
I live in the upper west side and they allow us to double park and leave a note on our wind-shield with our number :)
guess you get what you pay for!
So I see from the Malba Gardens post that Dan the Man (yes his law school slogan) has learned much from FORMER STATE SENATOR NOBODY CARES, LIKE FRANK.
"Mr. Halloran and Dennis Ring his former Chief of staff refused to comment and or commit to possibly reintroducing this bill with community organizations input".
I guess he has not yet learnd that his mentor lost his seat.
Let us not wait 35 more years to get rid of this dissapointment.

Good to see we have some comedians amongst us. However I would love to know what Dan "The Man" for Student Government , is doing for his constituants now that he represents the more that just the Law Club at his school?
You can not not respond to the constituants, and that is the bottom line. I for one am tired of hearing about the Traffic cop, just because he gave Dan a Ticket.
Lets hold these guys accountable already.
They also allow double parking in parts of Brooklyn.
HALLORAN IS PART OF THAT CREW WITH KELTY, APELIAN, BITTERMAN,SWEENEY, AND MOST OF CPB7.
