Sick substitute high school teacher gives sex assignment
From
CBS:
It was one assignment students in Queens will not soon forget.
The scandalous schoolwork was loaded with sexually explicit material, and as CBS 2′s John Metaxas found out students were given a book with some very racy reading.
Sixteen-year-old Giavanna Grasso got the shock of her life Monday.
The junior at Robert Goddard High School in Ozone Park was asked to find descriptive language in a passage of literature for her digital arts English class. But to her surprise she found herself reading explicit, sexually oriented and vulgar language that included a crude joke about animals.

Shakespeare? Tolstoy? Herodotus? Steinbeck? Hemingway?
What's a Hemingway?
4 or 5 pounds!!!
Why bother reading from the "Dead White Male Canon"!
We don't need to infiltrate, invade, or take over your stinking country!
You're doing the job for us!!
The "Progressive Agenda" is the greatest weapon EVER developed to destroy Amerika!!!!
uhm. alfred, you make no sense. This book has nothing to do with the "progressive agenda" it's a just a teacher trying to get his/her kids to read something. Public school teachers are faced with "students" who refuse to read or even graduate, so they try to use modern literature to attract them.
Most 16 year olds would happily read a book written about issues they can relate to compared with herodotus and tolstoy. Btw what High schools actually assign tolstoy?
I'm not saying this teacher was right, but I think it's an over reaction by the kid and her parents. I mean if they're offended by this then what are they going to say about Catcher in the Rye? Catch 22? or In Our Time? (some books out of your dead white guy collection)
No explicit discussions of sex in Catcher in the Rye that I can recall.
Come again?
For the record...she just made them read Bret Easton Ellis' "Rules of Attraction."
ALSO, They were 11th graders. I went to Junior High in Ozone Park (JHS 210), 10% of my fellow 7th graders were pregnant back in 1998. So I'm pretty sure not one of these kids are shocked by the word "fuck" or "pussy." In seventh grade I heard kids say all the time "Ram that bitch in the ass." Yep. It's true.
Over-reaction indeed. In Ozone Park, maybe they should worry about the rising gang-related murder rate that's happening in the southwest Queens area. Those are affecting 16+ y/o way more than trying to get them to read a book.

Keep going. Almost there.
The rat and the elephant. A rat's walking along the road and gets a thorn in its foot. It sees the elephant and asks it to remove the thorn. The elephant says, "Sure if you'll let me have sex with you." The rat says "OK". And they commence fucking. A hunter walks by and sees the rat and shoots it. As it dies, it starts to moan in pain and the elephant says "Take it you bitch. Take it".
Do they really think Bret Easton Ellis is a scandalous author?
That seems pretty prudish to me.
As I've known it, he is an award willing well respected author whose work is popular with young people.
Teachers in the Bronx have to talk and RAP ebonic gibberish to get kids attention, I know one of them
She (this teacher) total pot smoking idiot but keeps getting promoted because she does what she is told.
That is: Do anything to keep them calm & seated and pass them so the classrooms space keep's moving.
Test scores "no problem" the DOE will simply make them easy to pass.
The offspring of illegal alien nationals are a total loss.
These are the next generation of people for this city or should I say Pueblo Mexico.
Think about it:
How will this next generation of vegetables support themselves. Where is the already broke government going all that $$ to take care of them so they don't turn this place into impoverished Guatemexican war zone.
A 16 year old offended by the word diaphragm? Sounds like someone is a bit sheltered. Next they will have to teach sex ed without those awful vulgar words: penis and vagina.
We are turning into a society of babies.
Wunderbar, chust wunderbar. I luff dis zite. It's so dirrrty. Hahr-hahr.
Ok, to all my "open-minded" readers who think this is just fine...
How about reading classic books in school? How about the fact that many of these kids are going to graduate without knowing how to read, having no comprehension about what they read or critically analyzing what they read? What literary lessons are found in a book that uses "fuck" and "pussy" instead of telling a story? Do these kids even know what a work of fiction is compared to non-fiction? Sounds like the previous commenter grew up when "fuck" and "pussy" were all the kids were going to school for.
After they finish with Steinbeck and Hemingway and Longfellow, maybe they'll be ready for "fuck" and "pussy".
God we're in trouble.
As I recall, Holden Caufield also used the word "fuck," hired a prostitute, and inspired laziness.
But you know what came out of reading "Catcher in the Rye?" Worthwhile, discussions in English class.
Brent Easton Ellis is legit modern work. Discussions can be worthwhile with modern best-sellers, as well.
I mean, I could go the Queens Crap direction and agree. But then, why not take "Catcher in the Rye" off the shelves, didn't it inspire the assassination of John Lennon? WHY ARE OUR KIDS READING SUCH CLASSIC FILTH!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
You foolish Americans!!!!
We Chinese are buying up natural resources around the world!
We control the market in rare earth metals - just ask the Japanese!
We make oil deals with countries in the middle east!
We have high tech factories that construct the most advanced computer chips!
Our high school students consistently score the highest in math and science!
Chinese students dominate the best schools in NYC - Stuyvesant, Bronx Science!
We also dominate the engineering programs in every U.S. university!
You foolish Americans have quotas to LIMIT us from the top universities! If it weren't for quotas, there wouldn't be a single round-eye at Harvard!
And here you fools have to give pornographic books to your dim-witted American high school students, because they have no interest in education!!
WE WILL BURY YOU!!!!!!
Can we please get rid of Judy Blume books as well?
Her books like "Blubber" and "Forever" and "Are you there God? It's me Margaret" are just inciting terrible bullying and sex ideas in our elementary school readers. They don't belong in the children's section of public libraries. It's an abomination to innocent children everywhere.
And the internet. God forsaken Google!
How about reading classic books in school? How about the fact that many of these kids are going to graduate without knowing how to read, having no comprehension about what they read or critically analyzing what they read?
Students don't have to read only classic books to practice reading comprehension skills. I think one of the benefits of modern books is they can be more interesting to the readers and help to encourage reading.
What literary lessons are found in a book that uses "fuck" and "pussy" instead of telling a story?
The fact that you think a book doesn't tell a story or have literary lessons because it uses the works fuck and pussy shows your closed minded thinking with regards to this issue.
WE WILL BURY YOU!!!!!!

The Great Gatsby also uses words like "jism" and "fellatio". I guess you prudes want to ban that book too?
I think when kids say "I'm going to perform fellatio on that fellow," it's totally more appropriate than "I'm going to oral fuck the hell out of him."
You know, it's just because fellatio is a more literary term than "oral fuck" It makes the acts that they're currently doing seem more intelligent. This is why we must ban most modern text. They use modern lingo for sexual acts that have never been performed by 11th graders in the history of public schooling.
This was CBS' LEAD STORY last night. What the fuck?!
Why is this news? Crappy, you're better than this.
Honestly, for the people who think a "classic" author (ie Steinbeck, Salinger, Hemingway) is a more modest alternative, have you even bothered to read those novels? While not rife with sexual content, I can recall several passages from each of the authors mentioned above that raised my adolescent eyebrows. Trust me, I'm not a prude. The point is, sex is part of the human condition, and should not be relegated to the XXX section of literature. It seems this 16 year old is immature to be so vehemently opposed to the passages she's talking about, or too stupid to understand the subtext behind the words. If any of you need help interpreting them, let me know.
>The Rules of Attraction
>Dark Comedy & Satire
Why are we still having this discussion?
Honestly, if you haven't read the book, kindly remove yourself from the discussion.
Furthermore, if you don't look at this book in terms of its Zeitgeist, you are just plain doing it wrong.
Sad to see this is what passes for news nowadays.
Kids.
Who is John Galt?
Find out in Atlas Shrugged.

$10,000 essay prize on the table for you.
Oh god, get that objectivistism out of here.
We do not need our children reading that trash.
Does she want Shakespeare taught instead?
How about Romeo and Juliet?
That way the topic of early adolescent sex can be completely avoided...
"We", "our".
Spoken like a true collectivist.
Crapper, you're kidding right? Should we just have high school kids watching Sesame Street because it has wholesome morals and teaches the alphabet?
Its called literature, it often contains adult themes and language. As i recall Shakespeare called women whores, Steinbeck described murder,Hemingway talked about pretty things like rape murder death and depression.
People need to grow up and get over it. There's foul language out there, especially in schools. But if that can ever be channeled constructively then lets use it for something.
No, I am not kidding. What is the point of pulling a few pages out of a novel that the kids didn't read which contain controversial language and giving them a homework assignment based on it? It can't be read by the students in context and as you are a substitute teacher, you won't be around to discuss it with them. Subs used to pick up where the absent teacher left off, not start controversy. It also apparently was not part of the approved curriculum. So defend it all you want, but this was a big mistake.
"Who is John Galt?"
The village idiot?
Crapper, the way you describe it, it certainly was a big stupid mistake.
The worst part about English class was no reading. It was what they were asking you to read.
What sane teenage boy wants to read "Little House on the Prairie"? or "Romeo & Juliet"
I was thankfully actually cut a deal with my 9th grade English teacher and was able to Read "Hamlet" instead of R&J, and to this day, is still my favorite book.
Reading is BY FAR much more enjoyable when the subject matter isn't dictated to you. Part of the fun of learning is the exploration process, and when that is taken from you, you may as well slit your wrists.
*not reading
A teacher can make or break a book for you by explaining what to look for and what literary devices were used.
And if you still can't stand the books assigned, that's what a library card is for.
"Reading is BY FAR much more enjoyable when the subject matter isn't dictated to you. Part of the fun of learning is the exploration process, and when that is taken from you, you may as well slit your wrists."
Agreed - BUT - there are classics that should be univeraly read, understood and appreciated. In high school we read Macbeth, then The Hobbit and then One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I think if you mix it up, it helps.
In my sophmore year at one of the top Co-Ed Catholic H.S in Queens I read "Ethan Frome"...just saying...BTW, I hated that book, but, I remember, the discussion in class was riveting...
