From NY1:
A Brooklyn lawmaker is trying to extend the city’s indoor smoking ban to hookah bars.
City Councilman Vincent Gentile is expected to introduce a bill this week that would add all non-tobacco smoking products – including the legal herbal smoke – to the city's ban.
Gentile argues hookah smoke, containing tar and carbon monoxide, is just as dangerous as cigarette smoke.
Under the proposal, no new hookah bars would be allowed to open beginning in 2012.
Existing hookah bars would be required to register with the New York City Department of Health, and would not be allowed to expand or change locations.

Re: Smoking in public esablishments
I've always thought that the best solution would be that a bar/restaurant should decide whether or not they allow smoking. The only caveat is that they would have to post a big, simple sign in front showing what they allowed. Just a big colored circle - green if smoking is allowed everywhere, yellow if smoking is allowed in limited areas, or red if smoking is not allowed.
Restaurant and bar owners can choose and patrons can choose. And if you tell me that employees might be subjected to second hand smoke - you can always quit and then go talk to a coal miner.
Racism! Anti-Muslim! Anti-Islam! Anti-religion-of-peace!
Hookah bars no - Hookers - at beautiful ones - yes!

Stop this - we are all wise to these shouts. No one in NYC will pay you any mind about your accusations. Go elsewhere to the mid-west - see what you will get there.

because the people who make the laws are the ones in those bars. Of COURSE they will never be attacked like the places that the 'peasants' hang out at.
And stinky cigar bars are OK because...
Because 1) there are so few of them 2) the patrons don't sit outside during the summer and smoke 3) they are required to have heavy-duty fans clearing the place out and 4) no one is forced to go or work there.

BULLSHIT!!! Try passing the one in Bayside on 41st right off Bell Blvd. When you go to Ralph's Ices during the summer, you can smell the stench even inside the ices store!!! BTW, the patrons stand outside instead of sit. Does that make it OK? Complaints were made but ignored. Any more lies you'd like to tell us?
Take me to ze Kasbah.
Is there any scientific study of the dangers of herbal smokes?
Smoking is still legal outdoors, even if it is in front of a cigar store.
As for some of the objections here, I'm nauseated by the smell of fresh nail polish, some women's perfume and some people's music. I am victimized by baby carriages blocking my passage, people who stop in doorways and the middle of the sidewalk, and self-absorbed parents bringing out-of-control children into movies, restaurants and especially bars.
But I realize that the above are all currently legal and part of the trade-off of living in a dense urban setting. And I'm not a snotty narcissist.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Thanks I needed a good laugh!

What's the matter? Too lazy to do your own research?

Hey jerk wad...there's a big difference between cigarette smoke and cigar smoke. Of course it would be hard for you to discern the difference having your head up your ass all the time.
Hookah bars prevent women from participating in smoking if there are men around. (Like those guys are really hunks right) but women are not welcomed at least in these Arab places - they are not missing anything and yes there is a health issue but if Arabs don't care about this - we should be as we will pay for their health care bill in the end. Make these clubs stop burning weeds.

Amster-DAMN!!!
Can't say I have ever seen such an informed and educated set of commentors.
Cigarette smokers will find somewhere to smoke, as will cigar smokers as will hookah smokers.
To each its own. If you are bothered by any of the above, do not frequent the block on 41st ave, or Steinway.
I see plenty of women in hookah bars, a lot of the times in larger amounts than men.
If you want to impede on my civil liberties, I'll tell you where to go and how to get there.

And fuck you too! What about my civil liberties? Shouldn't it be my right to walk down the street and not be assaulted by cigar smoke? It hangs on your clothing, fer crap's sake, especially when there are multiple smokers. How dare you tell me not to use a public street! Now go to hell where you belong.
