Pete's butt-ing in

From the NY Post:

A city councilman wants a filtered version of Mayor Bloomberg's plan to curb smoking at parks, pedestrian plazas and beaches.

Peter Vallone (D-Queens) believes the mayor's proposed ban -- which has the endorsement of Council Speaker Christine Quinn -- is going too far, and he plans to introduce legislation to lighten it up.

Vallone, a self-described "health nut" who supported the mayor's 2002 smoking ban in restaurants and bars, wants to nix the suggested restriction on puffing on pedestrian plazas.

He also wants to create smoking zones in parks and on beaches larger than two acres. He supports the concept of curtailing smoking on beaches and in parks because "too many smokers seem to believe they have a right to flick their cigarette butts wherever they happen to be."

Bloomberg, through a spokesman, declined comment on the proposed legislation.

In a park? Come on. Dont tell me a couple of whiffs of smoke in an open park is cancerous. BS.

I was at Forest Park a couple of weeks ago. The smell of raw pork and bad cologne almost made me vomit. CAN I HAVE A CITY LAW to stop?

As opposed to those with a can of coke, a poland spring water or a wrapper from MacDonalds. They always find themselves in a garbage can.

Btw - spending an afternoon in Forest Park - one smells more friggin marijuana than anything from cigarettes.

Peter let in the hookah pipes and many the tenants in the buildings facing that had to move.

How can a 'health nut' be in favor of smoking anywhere?

Did municipalities that quit buying garbage cans with the ashtrays on the top and the garbage bins underneath really think that people would stomp out their cigs then put them into the can? We had ashtrays for a reason. Ashtrays didn't encourage smoking they provided a place for the butts. Taking away ashtrays didn't discourage smoking they just left smokers with the incentive to throw butts on the ground with all the other trash some people throw on the ground.

The smoking ban in California works great. Beaches and parks are cleaner, and people actually do obey the rule.
