From the Times Ledger:
The 114th Precinct will send out an additional squad car to patrol Astoria Park on weekend nights this fall following an increase in quality-of-life crimes as well as a murder in the park during the summer, City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Astoria) said.
The councilman said his office has received numerous complaints from Astoria residents about blaring radios and other noise, speeding cars along Shore Boulevard and litter in the park.
In July, a 32-year-old Astoria man was strangled to death in the park and a transient couple was charged in the murder. The 114th Precinct will dispatch a squad car on weekends this fall to drive around Ditmars and Shore boulevards, Astoria Park South and 19th Street, Vallone said.
“Astoria Park has seen an increase in quality-of-life crimes,” Vallone said. “They always build up over the summer, but it seems to me to be worse around the park this year.”
The councilman said the precinct’s new deputy inspector, Stephen Cirabisi, agreed to add the patrol car after they had a discussion about crime at the park.
The problems get worse in the summer so they add a patrol car when summer's over? Makes sense...

THatwill last about..........a week. There are no "extra" cops.If it is an overtime post, the cops will have to wtie a spcific number of tickets, stop and frisks, etc. If it is not overtime, then that means no one is getting a dayoff, thefore the cops will not be happy to be there..............either way....it's smoke &mirrors.
Hey, this will make the folks over at astorians.com happy.
Note that next spring we will start the cycle all over again.
Surprised they did not suggest a civilian patrol. It seems that when government fails them (as it does over and over in that part of our quaint boro) their reaction is NOT to criticise or expect much of anything ... but to do the work themselves.
smart people there.
Not true.
They hold "listening sessions"!
Of course! If they put a car on duty when they know the number of crimes are going to go down (because it is the end of summer), they can turn around and go
"Look! we added a patrol and crime went down! We did a great job! and now that the crime is lower, they can then justify pulling the patrol back off the park because, hey, there isnt enough crime there to justify the need anymore."
Its all a joke.
I currently rent in Astoria and my wife and I are thinking about buying a house in the ditmars area. Based on some stuff I've read recently (crime going up, loud parties in the park, garbage in the park, smell from sewage plant), I've started to reconsider. Is the neighborhood going downhill? There's so much that I like about the neighborhood, but it seems quality of life in going down. To get any problems taken care of, it takes an enormous effort by people in the community constantly complaining to the police, Vallone, etc. I feel that with the bad economy, rising crime and the city's tight budget, quality of life issues like garbage and noise violations just won't be a priority. Am I too being pessimistic? I really want to stay in Astoria (rather than moving to the suburbs), but I worry about buying a house in a neighborhood that may be heading downhill.
Previous poster thinking about not buying in Astoria.
Just move back to Kansas, you will feel at home once again.

Tell ya what hack, you want your community to look like Corona or the Bronx, why dont YOU move there instead of imposing your bullshit on the rest of Astoria?

Sorry bro you are a few decades too late. Also the problems you cited with Astoria are not unique to that just area.
On the way to the park from the 114, all the car has to do is conduct a car stop of any one of dozens of cars on Hoyt Avenue or Astoria Boulevard committing a VTL violation at any given moment. In the likely possible event that they get a collar for a related offense, DWI, suspended license, GLA etc, now that car will be down for the night. Nice offer, but one car will not be very effective.
That is wonderful, exactly what is needed. Yet, why not in Whitestone where burglaries have been consistant, car thefts on the rise, graffitti and vandalism on way up, and oh yes that little thing about cars being vandalized and torched.
Alfredo
Ok Ok so maybe Whitestone really needs that Satelite Pct?
WHEN?
Alfredo
Everyday I pass the NYPD Fleet Support Bldg. by Calvary Cemetery. The number of vehicles that don't move for months at a time would sicken you. And they don't know were to put them all.

If you are referring to the cars that are there for repairs, you can thank the union civilian mechanics for that. They only have to do a certain amount of work per day. Realistically, they could have all those cars out in a few days, but the PD can't do a damn thing to make them work faster.
Regardless, even if every car was on the street, the Police Dept can't hire or retain enough warm bodies to fill them. The NYPD is ALOT worse off right now than anyone really knows....

Or they can be like the people here, who criticize and complain about how things are not as they were 40 years ago, and get nothing in return.
How is Maspeth/Middle Village, or the rest of Queens for that matter? Sometimes if things aren't getting done by the gov't you have to take things into your own hands. Otherwise, you just have a bunch of people complaining about the "machine" and things will still suck. Get off your ass and do something to better your community.
Where have you gone,
Curtis Sliwa,
our city turns its lonely eyes to you,
ooh, ooh, ooh...
Too bad, Astoria Park was always a nice place 24 x 7. Now it's over-run by illegals and criminals who practically live there.
MYTH

PRETTY PATHETIC, EH?
Time to break some knees again. The good old Queens way.
I run ditmars, shore blvd. On weekends the cars speeding on shore is just rediculious, the crap on the sidewalk, the loud radios, and the douche bags that set up their patio furniture on the sidewalk all are fun obstacles.....no where a cop car in sight though.

Nothing illegal about sitting on a chair on a sidewalk. I have been there, and there is plenty of room to run even with the people lounging.
