Long-time residents of the District like myself never dreamed that someone would want to demolish a beautiful old beloved tudor or sacrifice a grand old colonial with a century old magnolia on the front lawn and replace it with a monstrous pale pink glittered brick rectangular box, and in addition, kill all trees on the property and hardscape everything - the concept seems inconceivable to me.
AND please, it is NOT just the Asian contractors! - overdevelopment was and IS committed by immigrant ITALIAN and the GREEK contractors as well in concert with what appears to be a very corrupt building department.
Avella came in at the right time - there WERE homes that were demolished prior to his term, but under his WATCH our nabs were SAVED from these sh*theads. His presence at sites marked for demolition was GREATLY appreciated.

They literally build right on the property line. If you google check street view, you can see the nice one family ranch house that was once there. Sad to say, but much of the neighborhood has changed so greatly, it will never be the same.

The lot on the corner of 23rd Ave and Ryan Ct is huge, it will probably be subdivided and become 2 or 3 big ugly beige boxes, two families each, not counting the illegal basements.

Back to Avella ... he created the R2A zone with City Planning. It greatly reduced what could be built on lots that were formerly R2, who's wording is as loose as Lady Gaga's legs.
Unfortunately, that house on the big lot in Whitestone is a block or two away from R2A. Even if it was in R2A, it would still be torn down. As long as a gazillion new residents want to live in the area, big properties will be divided. That's just the sad but true economic fact.
Don't blame Avella, he did more to save what's on the ground than anyone could have even imagined prior to 1995. It would be MUCH MUCH MUCH worse now w/o the changes he and the community demanded and besides, it's never an all-win situation anyway ... we're lucky we got as much as we did.

A friend whose business was located office on Bell B'lvd. had an important question regarding his store which needed to be answered PDQ.
I advised him to call Tony's office to get that time sensitive matter settled before he could receive an unwarrented hefty fine.
It took two days before he heard from Tony's without-a-clue staffer.
Disappointed (and embarrassed)at the crappy "service" I then suggested he contact Senator Padavan's office.
They got back to him within an hour or two...which is SOP for their professional staff!
Frank's office runs like a top!
