Jails to open and reopen

From NY1:

The city is moving forward with plans to reopen a jail in Downtown Brooklyn, despite past concerns from local lawmakers and residents.

Department of Correction officials, however, say they have dropped a plan to double the size of the Brooklyn Detention Center.

As part of a proposal to rearrange the local jail system, the city will also reopen a 457-bed facility in Kew Gardens.

Both jails have been closed for more than five years.

There are also plans to demolish run-down buildings on Rikers Island and construct there a new, smaller facility.

Overall, it is expected to cost more than $600 million dollars

The new facility at Rikers is expected to be completed by 2017.

That plan will reduce the number of inmate beds in the city, but officials say the average daily inmate population in DOC facilities has fallen steadily to around 13,000 currently.
