Elderly man killed crossing Queens Blvd

From the Daily News:

A 76-year-old man was mowed down early Friday while crossing notorious Queens Blvd. in Kew Gardens, police said.

Richard Borchers was crossing 80th Rd. when a marked Correction Department car heading south slammed into him about 5:30 a.m, police said.

The mortally wounded Borchers was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It was initially unclear whether he was crossing with the light.

Some witnesses told cops Borchers had the right of way, but cops believe that he was walking against the light.

The driver, a civilian worker, remained on the scene and is not expected to be charged, sources said.

See? These pedestrians are nearly as bad as the cyclists. They ignore lights and flout our traffic laws. They should be banned from our roads. Long live the single-occupant motor vehicle!!!

I don't recall anyone ever saying that bikes should be banned or that carpooling was bad, just that we shouldn't bend over backward to pander to cyclists. So your attempt at sarcasm failed. You're not good at it and should cease that shit immediately.

Yup, you too Crapper.

I'm sick of Queens Blvd being called the Blvd of Death-- if you cross when you are supposed to, it's perfectly safe.

There's a term for that: selective memory.

If I'm no good at sarcasm, you're no good at logical argument or consistency.

Pick your freaking battles, complainer!

Show me where. Go ahead.

If Brochers could see that he had a red light, he should have stayed put. I have been to that intersection and it can be crossed in the amount of time that the traffic light is timed. Nothing can be done about Queens Blvd as long as people cross it at 5:30am against the light. In fact at 5:30am, if you see traffic coming and you have a green light, anticipate that the driver is distracted and doesn't see you and is not going to stop.

I realize this post is a month old but I just happened across it. It is BS that Queens Blvd is safe to cross if you obey the traffic laws. The biggest problem on QB for pedestrians and cyclists (based on my experience crossing at Broadway/Grand) is motor vehicles TURNING onto QB when they have a green light which is also when the pedestrians have a "walk" sign for crossing. Two or more lanes of motorists often turn simultaneously without respecting those in the crosswalk (who are in fact observing traffic laws and crossing with the light). This dangerous situation could be solved by stopping traffic long enough to let everyone cross, and adding a separate turn light for cars that would not coincide with the walk light.
