Do as we say, not as we do

New York City officials have spent tens of thousands of dollars on car services this year, despite Mayor Michael Bloomberg's public embrace of mass transit, according to a new online database that tracks and posts city expenditures hours after they are processed.

The database, called Checkbook NYC, has been under construction for several months and was unveiled Thursday. Officials said it shows 99 percent of all the money the city spends -- more than $35 billion since Jan. 1.

Among the expenditures are more than $10,000 in car service charges among the mayor's own budget staff, more than $66,000 by law department officials and more than $11,000 racked up by City Council staffers.

Bloomberg has ... for years said the city's mass transit is the best in the world, and urges more people to use it.


Why didn't they all just hop on their bicycles to get home?

This ma amazes me with bull shit comments on the daily basis. Doe's he not think that Americans travel? transit systems in Japan,China,Germany are much better then ours. Even president Obama said "we are no longer on top of the list in transport" in a recent speech in NY.

The transit system in Manhattan is the only one that can compete with other city transit systems. The outer boroughs have been neglected for years. The rise of the dollar van and livery cabs has occurred in neighborhoods where mass transit is poor.

Businesses and manufacturers need an efficient way to transport goods, services and workers. The present transit system just can't do any of those things. The city can't survive alone on tourism, service and development industries.

Depends on what you mean. The "city" isn't ignoring Wallets Point, downtown Flooshing, and other lucrative properties.

Well since crapper posted that the mayor was boasting about the transit system, then you could say Flooshing and Wallets Point have been neglected. Even before the influx of development, the 7 train and the bus service were never adequate enough to meet the residents needs,

I totally agree with you. I was making the point that neighborhoods and properties are ignored until they become useful to one of Bloomtard's buddies. However, as you suggest, the infrastructure CANNOT support the new commercial/residential developments. By the time that people wake up and see the overcrowded subways and buses, the lack of necessary services such as electricity, garbage collection, and sewers, and finally, the lack of seats at the local public schools, then it is already too late. Point well taken, Detective M.

These livery cab charges are modest compared to what it costs to keep a fleet of city cars for these budget office people. I'm not a fan of everything Bloomberg does,but cutting the city car fleet was a good move. Another words, it's cheaper to use public transit and livery cars than upkeep for a bunch of city cars. And yeah, Queens buses need help.

I assume crapper posted the news article to highlight the hypocrisy of Bloomberg which you seemed to have missed. They aren't using mass transit. A car service is still an automobile. If the mayor was so worried about traffic why is city hall even paying for a car service, instead of giving their employees a bicycle or metro card.
