Could we have another major blackout?

From CBS 2:

Four years ago, 174,000 people across Queens lost power for a week when Con Edison equipment failed.

"I couldn't keep full hours because of the electric," said Sim. "I was keeping half time hours."

Assemblyman Michael Gianaris says another blackout could easily rock New York.

"The investment in infrastructure was terribly inadequate," he said. "They were spending millions on executives, increasing dividends to shareholders, but one of the places they were not spending money was improving the wires underground."

Con Edison's response? Wrong, they said.

"With any heat wave you can have power outages," said a Con Ed spokesperson.

Con Ed is full of baloney!! They line their pockets with gold and screw the masses and we sit back each year and do nothing. We'd better start screaming loud and long because the bills are constantly increasing and the service is constantly decreasing!!!!

Ah, you talking about a 100 year old company whose name is the byword for electricty, or a bunch of Albany hacks?

If it comes to power generation, will I listen to the pros, or one of those clowns from state government who can't even pass a budget.

Walk around Gianaris district.

Closed hospitals, it smells like a cesspool, the developers are having a field day destroying it, and the cafes all have their walls off pumping AC to the sidewalks while they tell us to conserve.

He is full of bulls*t!

NO WE REELECT THEM

We'd better start screaming loud and long because the bills are constantly increasing and the service is constantly decreasing!!!!

YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT STATE GOVERNMENT, RIGHT?

1.5 million undocumented dempcrats from across the border obviously makes the queens power during a 100 degree heat wave "unsustainable".

their cost to new york taxpayers is $9.5 billion per year.

thank you liberal/democrats.

Of course there is a greater potential than not to experience another black-out in this city and tri-state region. Billions of $$ are necessary to invest in new infrastructure and equipment to prevent black-outs. Con Ed has been lucky to have escaped this since then.

However, more capacity and cheaper power sources from Canada have been talked about to prevent relying on current setup. The plan involved string new high-tech power grid from Canada south and then crossing east until the thruway where the power lines would follow to NYC. This plan would provide a new source of cheap hydro-produced power that would lower our individual costs, create a new power grid that would service areas along it's path and be a redundant source of juice in the event of outages.

If you remember California's rolling black-outs some years ago, it exposed the sub-par network of power-grids the nation is relying on. Th fix by the states and federal government was to expand the grid to avoid overloaded conditions and provide an alternate path for electricity to travel if one major leg of the grid is disabled.

So the point is: where is the NYS new power grid from Canada going to be built, or will we wait until we must live with rolling power-outages for years until alternatives are built? remember our NYS is the do nothing State thanks to the fools in power in Albany!

Gianaris what Gianaris? I have never seen this clown around the district, let alone heard of him doing anything for us. This useless hack continues to receive a fat check while doing nothing. Where do I sign up for such a job??

Exhibit A as to why a million new people in NYC makes no sense to me and my family.

We cannot even take care of the people that are here.

I'm no fan of Con Ed, but how can you reasonably expect them to keep up with the mass overdevelopment. You have eight families living on properties where you once had only one or two. Love how these politicians do nothing but complain about utility companies, but they're responsible for all the overdevelopment and no one blames them. Vote all of them out in November!

Actually a neighbor of mine in northeast Flushing this past Tuesday got a Con Ed robo-call warning residents to conserve energy.

I lost power for one minute right in the middle of an e-mail reply.

We also experienced some flickering lights previous to that.

Goodbye downtown Flushing if Flushing Commons...along with the other scheduled 50 projects that are expected to be built by the year 2013!

Overbuilding with a frayed grid is a recipe for disaster.

Remember the Astoria blackout?

I remember a 24 hour blackout in 1977 when looters hit a store near Lippman Arcade. As I emerged from the subway I heard the sound of breaking glass which was rather unnerving.

Oh...but that incident wasn't publicized.

And that was way before all of the rampant over development which has occurred since.

I'm going to purchase a voltmeter (relatively inexpensive) and monitor my electrical service.

If I find out that Con Ed is reducing my voltage I'll keep a daily log and deduct full payment of my bill in accordance to the voltage cut they impose on me.

I pay to receive the full 110 volt service at each outlet in my home.

"The Night The Lights Went Out"
The Trammps - 1977

Where were you when the lights went out
In New York City (I wanna know, I wanna know)
Where were you when the lights went out
In New York City

Don't you know that I was making love
(She was making love)

I remember on the 13th of July
The only light was the light up in the sky
New York had black-out for 25 hours or more
And nobody really knows the reason why

Oooh, somebody called it love down on the socket (The socket)
It was safe to say I went the door to lock it (To lock it)
So I took my lady by the hand
And led her to love me, love me, love me!

Where were you when the lights went out
In New York City (All over the town, yeah)
Where were you when the lights went out
In New York City

Don't you know that I was making love
(She was making love)
Oooh, sweet making love
(She was making love)

Central Park was jammed after dark
Innocent girl from love above
What the nation's gonna grow in nine months or so
Where we all a little bit baby-boom

Politicians said it was a pity (A pity)
But that was the night they call it love city (Love city)
So I took my lady by the hand
And led her to love me, love me, love me!

No the rolling blackouts in California were fixed by right wing Enron which you can hear in the court played records of Enron employees on their phones joking about old ladies in the heat and bringing down Davis. The tapes were played many times on Night line years ago and elsewhere. They shut the grid off to make money and lied about it. Look it up.
That was the Thomas White and Cheney energy plan which was a joke and the governator, Cheney, and Bush all made money by that fixed blackout.

NYC on the other hand has extremely old wires and cables with the horrid over development. There still would be problems because the massive amount of wires, cables, etc is a huge job with so many close together neighborhoods.

Yes we should be getting energy from Canada's grid has been talked about for quite some time.

Also there is no excuse for this city not to have solar panels years ago on the flat roofs for this extreme heat summers that happen all the time in NYC. Other states are way ahead of NY on this. Ah yes NY talks a good game and always blames someone else but it is the last to maybe upgrade the system.

Bloombucks should shut his mouth cause his hot air has done nothing to take responsibility or maintain anything in the city.

the state of california is overloaded with illegal alien undocumented democrats. the over development and stresses on the utility companies and social services is why many millions of taxpayers have fled to the mountain states.

smart citizens do not believe in "SPREAD THE WEALTH FEDERAL POLICIES FORCED BY UNELECTED CZARS"

the state is now almost bankrupt.

re:Poster #1

I think what is being said has to do with Con Ed as a huge conglomerate. They run the show and we, the residents, pay through the nose. As a private industry, they can raise the rates as they please. Consumer Affairs, whose responsibility it is protect consumers, does nothing to help us. This Dept. is supposed to research each & every proposed increase and come up with a fair reasonable solution as to why an increase is needed but they usually, in the end, back Con Ed and we continuously get raises. We've been paying summer rates since the beginning of May.....summer starts on 6/21/22. Is this fair....NO it isn't!! CEO's are the ones who line their pockets with gold and I agree that it's up to us to yell loud & clear and maybe it will do some good. We've been very lucky this past week that all of Queens wasn't hit with a blackout. Con Ed is making tons of money therefore new lines, wiring etc. should be updated. Our infrastructure is old and it and breaks down constantly. The workers should get off their fannies and do the work in the cooler months so that when the weather climbs up in temp, the system will be able to handle it.

They run the show and we, the residents, pay through the nose.

WELL, YEA, WITH ALL THE TWEEDER TAXES THAT ARE IMPOSED, UTILITY GENERATION IS VERY EXPENSIVE. SOMEONE HAS TO PAY FOR THE 1,000,000 NEW PEOPLE YOU POLS WANT - SINCE THEY ARE NOT HERE YET, I HAVE TO PAY FOR A SERVICE I WILL NEVER GET.

As a private industry, they can raise the rates as they please. Consumer Affairs, whose responsibility it is protect consumers, does nothing to help us.

THEY CANNOT RAISE RATES AS THEY PLEASE, AND IF CONSUMER AFFAIRS IS NOT DOING THEIR JOB ITS NOT MY FAULT NOR IS IT CON ED'S FAULT: ITS ALABANY'S FAULT.

This Dept. is supposed to research each & every proposed increase and come up with a fair reasonable solution as to why an increase is needed but they usually, in the end, back Con Ed and we continuously get raises.

LIKE THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY AND RENT INCREASES, EH?

We've been paying summer rates since the beginning of May.....summer starts on 6/21/22. Is this fair....NO it isn't!!

CEO's are the ones who line their pockets with gold and I agree that it's up to us to yell loud & clear and maybe it will do some good.

PLEASE, YOU MIGHT GET THIS PAST THE SEMI-LITERATE GREEK AND ITALIAN PEASANTS IN ASTORIA, BUT THE REST OF US DONT BUY IT.

ITS SO FUNNY WET BEHIND THE EAR KIDS THAT WORK IN ALBANY CAN COMMENT ON SOMETHING THEY HAVE NO BACKGROUND - POWER GENERATION. PASS THE FREAKIN BUDGET, MIKE, AND BRING HOME THE BACON TO ASTORIA - TO THE COMMUNITY GROUPS NOT THE DEVELOPERS.

THIS IS NOT PENNY STOCKS. THIS IS NOT SPECULATIVE STOCKS. THIS IS A FREAKIN UTILITY STOCK - THE STUFF OF TRUST FUNDS AND ESTATES.

We've been very lucky this past week that all of Queens wasn't hit with a blackout.

SURE, THE WAY YOU ASSHOLES LOOK THE OTHER WAY WHEN THERE ARE ILLEGAL CONVERSIONS, STORES AND YOUR BELOVED CAFES WITH NO FRONTS PUMPING AIR ONTO THE SIDEWALK, AND MORE AND MORE PEOPLE WITH 'PLANNED DEVELOPMENT' THAT IN REALITY IS ONLY PLANNED .... TO LINE THE DEVELOPER'S POCKETS WITH GOLD - SOMETHING THAT DOESNT SEEM TO BOTHER YOU MUCH.

Con Ed is making tons of money therefore new lines, wiring etc. should be updated.

IT IS - ALONG THE WATERFRONT WHERE THE NEW DEVELOPMENT IS GOING - AND PAID FOR BY ALL THE ARCHIES AND EDITHS YOU TURN YOUR NOSE UP TO AND WHOSE BLOCKS GET SHABBIER AND SABBIER EACH YEAR AS VITALITY IS SAPPED TO BENEFIT THE TOWER PEOPLE AND TWEEDED.

Our infrastructure is old and it and breaks down constantly.

REMEMBER THAT AND SAY SOMETHING WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT PUTTING ANOTHER MILLION HERE - THEN YOU MIGHT HAVE SOME CRED.
