From the Daily News:
Mayor Bloomberg says his new point man for running the city has found at least $500 million worth of waste and inefficiency - from unused office space to uncollected debts.
"Long term, I don't even think this scratches the surface of what we can do," Bloomberg said.
Deputy Mayor for Operations Stephen Goldsmith said the city will shrink its office space and vehicle fleets, centralize how it buys parts and manages computers and take other less-than-glamorous - but necessary - steps to save $500 million a year by 2014.
"The quality of customer service can go up at the same time we save taxpayer dollars," said Goldsmith, who said the city is paying for 10,000 desks with no employees at them.
Hizzoner is also targeting consolidation of human resources and information technology to save some additional coin.
"You can't do everything overnight," Bloomberg said. "We have saved a lot, but there's an awful lot more."
Yeah, like this...
$2M toilet

That's quite a crapper, people especially the Mexicans who have established a black car - illegal driver business next to Verizon and a couple doors away from this park will be thrilled and will be lining up or jumping the fence to use this 2 million dollar wonder of a crapper! Only Elmhurst get all the good stuff, when is this park opening? It already appears to be the areas' worst nightmare!
I'd gladly pay for the toilet if we could get rid of about a dozen politicians who generate more crap and cost a heck of a lot more.
No shit!!!?!!?!
Why not get a few estimates from plumbers and contractors in elmhurst? It would stimulate the local economy and save the city a bundle of money, which could be used elsewhere. Where are our local politicians and council members? Where is the outrage? Someone stands to make a fortune off this deal. This is why the city has no money. Get rid of the waste and inefficiency, which, by the way, would benefit the people who pay for all this crap through tax revenues.
...because the city loves throwing the taxpayer's money away, and then laying off the honest workers who then have to ultimately suffer. Take the whole CityTime project fiasco, for example.
Impeach Mike Bloomberg and his new deputy, Christine Quinn, and everyone who voted to extend term limits, everyone who stole tax payer money and all city employees that make us pay for limo rides home.
Bloomburg is so out of touch with the people of this city. You would think that a billionaire would be paying attention to our budget and would be fiscally responsible. He knows how to make money when it comes to his Personal Wealth. Why can't he do the same with our taxpayer money? What do we have to do to get rid of him? Could we have a special election to vote on impeachment?
What is John Liu's take on all this? After all, he is the Comptroller. Where is the Public Advocate (DiBlasi)? Isn't he supposed to advocate for the taxpayers? Why are these people always invisible when we need them? The only time they do show up if for a photo-op or at election time.
