Jackson Heights Cinema reopens

From the Daily News:

The Jackson Triplex, now renamed the Jackson Heights Cinema, has begun screening Bollywood flicks. And starting Friday, the revamped venue's new owners are adding American films to the lineup.

"We want everyone to feel at home when they come to this theater," said Siva Gunasegaram, the son of one of the theater's three new owners, of the movie house's Bollywood/Hollywood mix. "This is a theater that will bring everyone together."

The long-neglected Triplex, at 40-31 82d St., was shuttered last year after its previous owners could no longer afford the rent on the once-majestic theater. The neighborhood's only other movie house, the Bollywood-focused Eagle Theater, also closed around the same time due to financial woes.

Triplex's new owners hope to avoid their predecessor's fate by appealing to the area's multiethnic population. They are planning to subtitle all of the Bollywood movies in English and add Spanish subtitles to its American flicks.

They will also offer Indian snacks like samosas and kabobs, along with Hispanic goodies in its concession stands. And they're adamant about capping ticket prices at $9, and $6 for matinees.

Good for them. Some of the best movies coming out today are from Bollywood and they're not neglecting American films either. Nice.

Really?

I've seen a few - Bandit Queen, Salaam Bombay, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Khakee, and a few others, and most of them were stink bombs.

The best one was Disco Dancer, only because it was so absurd that it was funny!

How come they're not offering spanish subtitles on the bollywood movies?
