Flushing garage explodes
From Eyewitness News:
Five people were injured when a garage exploded at a home in Queens.
It happened just before 7 p.m. on 27th Avenue near Murray Street in Flushing.
Apparently the 31-year-old homeowner was cleaning his motorcycle in the garage while a tank of C16 high-grade racing fuel was leaking.
Vapors from the leak somehow ignited and caused an explosion in his garage, which also had several fireworks inside according to police.
The victims suffered shrapnel injuries and burns.
The homeowner suffered burns over 50% of his body.
He is in serious condition at Jacobi Medical Center's burn unit.
The resulting fire burned and destroyed the garage.

The city (police) ignore complaints when folks are tinkering with vehicles constantly in garages. We had someone painting cars in a tiny garage with the fumes affecting the neighboring houses. No response from the Police or city agencies. This practice of commercial activity should be illegal in residential homes or if so enforced.
It's not a job for police to respond to a complaint like that, dummy.
My mom who lives 5 blocks away heard the explosion. That's how loud it was.
31-year-old "homeowner" who will now be in foreclosure very very soon.
I see his moms basement as his future
Unless mom died left him the house which now will be sold to pay off his uninsured hospital bill.
Man that was stupid....1 of his buds was probably lightin up a doobie...and BOOM
Who the hell needs high grade race fuel in flushing? And stores it near fireworks?
I'm sure he getting ready to drag race somewhere.
Did they release a name? Sounds wigger material to me.
Horrific accident!
My sympathies and prayers to this young man and his family.
Terrorists are probably taking notes on what was flammable, what was the ignition source, etc. for future reference.
"The injured man, Justin Cohen, 31, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx with burns covering more than 70 percent of his body. Three other people in the area sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene."

It turns out non of the "race gas" the media described actually went on fire or exploded so there goes that theory. It seems it may have been a leaky propane tank and some paint fumes from some old paint he had laying around. Don't believe everything you hear.
What no illegals found living amongst the goods?
None of you respondents know what happened. I know this family very well. I lived across the street from them most my life. This was a horrific accident. Before you start posting your nonscene, make sure you know what you're talking about. This is someone's life hanging in the balance. Because you don't know him or his family it doesn't effect you. Just imagine it being your neighbor your grew up with. Your friend you would spend summers with at the beach or at BBQs with. Imagine it being your brother. And someone wrote in these blogs "Terrorists are probably taking notes on what was flammable, what was the ignition source, etc. for future reference."
That is a terrible thing to write.
Or that he was getting ready to drag race somewhere. Whoever wrote that -- YOU'RE WRONG. He had just gotten home, to his parents house with his girlfriend. She went into the house and he went into the garage, turned the light on and there was an explosion. He was getting ready to spend the evening with his family. People stick with what you know. Don't writ about things you don't.
My sympathies to the family and well wishes to those injured. Thanks for reporting the facts. And the admonishment was justly deserved.
So where did the story that was reported on the news come from?
The stories come from the same places all other stories come from...no where and everywhere. Justin is a good guy, always very polite to everyone. News people need something to report. When the reports first came out, they had the wrong location, the wrong age, and that he was cleaning a motorcycle. Justin does not own a motorcycle. Where did that come from? There is no motorcycle in the area -- people need something to write about. It's unfortunate. A lot of people watch the news and think they are getting accurate information and they don't.
So what caused the explosion?
We heard there's still a "car fixing" operation going on in a residential neighborhood home on the northeast corner of 154th St. and 35th Ave. for decades.
Is this true or just a wild rumor?
If the burn victim survives...fines and civil lawsuits are bound to follow and his insurance won't cover the defense costs because of the illegal activity (fireworks on premises).
In the end....it's a very sad story.
if you think that your neighbor is using the garage as a storage space for flammable materials call 311,D.O.B.if it is a fake garage still report it . precaution may protect your familie's lives and your property.
do it anon from a pay phone.....
