From the NY Post:The elections are long over, but the three leading Democratic candidates for citywide office last year still face fines of nearly $1.5 million for plastering the town with illegal posters, The Post has learned.
Records provided by the Environmental Control Board show that mayoral contender Bill Thompson received 8,257 summonses over the course of his near-upset campaign. Comptroller John Liu got 7,270, and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio was hit with 4,023. Like all posters attached to city property, each carries a $75 fine.
So Thompson could owe as much as $619,275, Liu $542,259 and de Blasio $301,725 if they're found guilty after administrative hearings. Under the convoluted system, some of the cases won't be heard until September.
Lawyers for all three candidates say they intend to challenge every summons.
One candidate told The Post there's a move afoot at the City Council to overhaul the process and wipe out the fines retroactively.
But a council source said that was unlikely, since "you couldn't do it just for the candidates and not everyone else."

sorry but the city makes it a point to make us pay for our fliers and JOhn Liu really plaster NYC illegally. He deliberately plaster all his posters knowing it was wrong. No only should he pay he fines but he should be sanctioned

Politicians don't think the laws should have to apply to them. They think they are special. Vote out all of these people come Election Day. If this was an average person, they'd have to pay the fines. This happened in Maspeth last year when local civic groups posted flyers for their Grand Avenue Festival. They were fined a couple of thousand dollars and I believe they tried to fight it, but had to pay. The civic groups had no knowledge of the no post law. I bet my house that these politicians will get away without paying the fines -- because the laws don't apply to them.

Yes, they attempted to use that lame excuse both at their ECB hearing and at a City Council committee hearing.
Any decent board member of a civic-related group would be embarrassed to claim that. He or she should know the rules, especially something that affects a neighborhood like the proliferation of illegal postering.
