From the Daily News:A day after winning reelection, Mayor Bloomberg on Thursday seemed to step back from a campaign proposal to have free crosstown bus service.
The "real issue" at the core of the no-fare proposal was speeding bus travel by reducing time spent boarding passengers, Bloomberg noted.
That goal might be achieved through technology, Bloomberg said after touring the city's 311 call center with MTA Chairman Jay Walder.

How about introducing electric trolly cars that are semi-open running along 42st lopping from the UN building to Javits Center. Eliminate the 7 line extension and buses in the process. Building this is easy make it a $1 fare incorporating it via the metro card.
Let's get real about what can be done - same above transportation shoul be introduced in Queens - How about Queens Blvd, Jamaica Ave and Woodhaven Blvd - extend them much deeper to serve those in 2 fare zones. Eliminate buses during non-peak day time hours.
The only fee busses you get are to ferry certain interest groups to polling places on election day.

NYCT really needs to get the smart card technology.This will save some time boarding trains/busses.Now if you could get people to use the rear doors to exit on busses,you cuold actually cut commut time.
