From the Queens Gazette:
A $20,000 state grant to Dutch Kills, delivered by state Senator George Onorato, came next. Walsh said again, as he had last month, that he sought suggestions about the best way to spend the funds and thus appear worthy of similar grants in the future. He held out a small shopping bag as a suggestion box and pleaded for written entries. Time is fairly short: the suggestions have to be acted upon and the money spent on them before next spring.
Why is the senator giving taxpayer money to a group that doesn't have a plan for its use? Doesn't that mean they don't need it? Why were other groups with stated projects passed up?

Why don't they use this money to move the millstones that are sitting in the middle of a construction site with debris piled on top of them.
Groups want them out of there in and placed where they are safe.
Huh? What? The Bricklayer is famous for not giving money to anything except development or a small group of machine favored projects.
What is going on here?
We need to get an accounting of this. No wine tasting junkets with this buster.
They might consider funding an exhibit of the Jorrison millstones. Dating from the colonial era, these stones have languished in a shabby sidewalk for decades. They are now crated and out of view in the middle of a construction project. The Greater Astoria Historical Society has expressed an interest in exhibiting the stones rather than leave them in the construction area. That would seem to me to be a worthy project.
This is nuts. Why is he giving money to that group if they have no idea how to spend it?
This is taxpayer money. Someone should give an account.
Payments to whom and for what purpose?
Something doesn't quite add up here. We have been asking Onorato for money for years and he has not even returned our calls.
What the hell is going on?
What the hell is going on?

If your neighborhood got ruined by overdevelopment, and you are the only civic in NYC that wants to UPZONE, and most importantly, after all that abuse, YOU ARE AN OUTSPOKEN ADVOCATE FOR MORE DEVELOPMENT IN THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES, you too can get lots of money.
Remember, this is Western Queens. The rules for civics are a bit different out there.
CB1 the community board from hell!
Well boyz n girlz. Lets stay on top of this and keep their tootsies in the fire.
I really want to see who this money is intended for. I think they already know and the little stunt about getting suggestions from the community is just that: a little stunt.
NY State is projecting a deficit of 10 billion dollars for the comming year. So it makes perfect sense to give 20k to a bunch of nitwits that have no idea how to spend it. This is political cronyism at its worst. I wonder what the boys at DK gave away in return for it?
Onorato has been in office since the 60's. Retire already! Vote this shitbag OUT!
THE WORD IS OUT SOME CLAIM THE (TAXPAYERS) MONEY WILL BE USED TO ENCOURAGE DEVELOPERS TO TARGET DUTCH KILLS.
SO SOME CLAIM.
MORE SHOULD WANT AN ACCOUNTING OF THIS.
