From City Council blog:
As the MTA finalizes its Capital Improvement Plan for next five years, Council Member Elizabeth S. Crowley, along with Senator Joseph Addabbo, Assembly Members Catherine Nolan and Michael Miller and community leaders called on the MTA to allow for the creation of much needed temporary green space on the corners of Metropolitan Avenue and Fresh Pond Road. Currently it is the site of an abandoned newsstand and convenience store that has been neglected for over ten years. Plans to develop this area date back to Fiscal Year 2003 and is included in their MTA’s current five-year Capital Plan.
“While we continue to wait for the MTA to finally develop this area, we should be granted the opportunity to beautify this property in the meantime,” said Council Member Elizabeth Crowley. “The thousands of Queens residents who pass daily through this intersection have had to look at the dilapidated condition of this property for over a decade. As the gateway to Ridgewood, this long-time eyesore hurts the surrounding businesses and stifles the area’s economic growth.”

It's about time. That's been in that condition for years.
I think the former service station across the street is part of that as well.
Focusing on a newspaper stand?
Shallow Liz is a fool. The gas station across the street is just as bad. A senator, a Couniclwoman and an Assemblyman protesting for such a small issue. Time to get rid of them all. They can't handle the large issues, so they focus on what their minds allow. They have more methane gas coming out of them then the cows upstate!
Actually, the gas station is mentioned in the Daily News. I guess Liz & company can only raise the funds to fix the newsstand right now. For that she should be excoriated?
Yes, let's excoriate Liz. Because Como and Gallagher did so much to take care of the eyesores.
vote out dizzy lizzy enough said, anything is better than what we have now.
Yes, let's bring back Ognibene, whose campaign is being run by Granny-molester Gallagher. Haven't we had enough of the Christ the King clubhouse?
Keep up the effort Elizabeth.
It is a step in the right direction.
The other problems can be addressed and resolved at the same time.
Fact is, this corner of Metropolitan Ave and Fresh Pond sits above a railroad tunnel that is slated to be rebuilt. Problem is the project keeps getting pushed back because the engineers don't know how they are going to alleviate the traffic flow during this type of construction. Supposedly, the gas station property was taken in order to move the intersection over when the rebuilding construction begins. The same maybe for the newstand for traffic going eastbound. I would check on this project before $ is spent to make this greenspace only temporarily. Especially since the city seems to pay @ $1,000 per tree and it will only be ripped out in two or three years. I would rather see weekly cleaning of these properties in the meantime.
The city would not pay a dime.
Crowley estimated it would cost about $10,000 and would take three to six months to demolish the rundown newsstand and create a green space.
"It wouldn't cost the MTA anything. We will raise the funds in the community," Crowley said, adding that volunteers have already come forward to help with the upkeep.
And the bridge construction was pushed back to 2014 as per CB5. I say do it.
Wow look how big Miller is. Only a matter of time before he has a massive heart attack and we have another special election.
Ideal replacement for two-ton Tony.
what the hell was the queens county dems smoking when they chose miller. this guy crawled out of nowhere and now he's an assemblyman. we'll never get this mess cleaned up.
oh please. that ugly greasy hair Liz Crowley is gonna be out of a job in about 5 weeks.
Everyone makes fun of her. what a sad pathetic person she is. and such white trash.
Look for Crowley to replace Miller and fill the Seminario seat after she loses to Ognibene. I'm sure her cousin Joe has it all arranged already.
