What was racist about this post? This is a show about food, the host goes to Flushing to sample the cuisine and a guy with chopsticks holds up a living octopus as if it were a delicacy ready to be eaten. I simply don't understand this and I bet most people who view this commercial won't either.
Plenty of animals, especially in Corona Park last evening. Anybody catch that brawl outside CBS press gate on the news ? I'd gladly welcome Flushing to create cuisine with some of these tennis people and papp's !
The world will think we eat still-living creatures here in Queens...
Do we?
That comments sure sounds like you are trying to say you are embarrased and you must be embarrased about the new immigrants beacause the people that have been here for at least the past twenty years do not eat live animals but the new immigrants do.
I have no idea how long the guy in the video has been in Queens. I do know that he was holding a live octopus up with chopsticks, which are generally used to eat food.
So your interpretation of my question seems to indicate that you have a giant chip on your shoulder about something.
I love how a post about one of my favorite shows, Tony Bourdain's "No Reservations," has devolved into a race-bating shouting match.

What is race baiting on the disgust at eating a live octopus.
You might want to censor yourself, and if that is how you cope with life, that is your problem.
If some people find third world dining conditions disgusting, and as American citizens, exercise their right to an opinion, it is just something you will have to deal with.
You can always move to the third world and revel in it if you are so fascinated by those ... cultures.
I think another live delicacy is called "drunk shrimp," where the chief uses alcohol on the live shrimp to stop them from squirming while they're eaten.
I'd still refrain from eating any mystery meat in a local Asian (especially Taiwanese) restaurant in downtown F-Liu-xhing.
Remember that "fried mice" incident that occurred in a take out Chinese restaurant in western Queens?
John Liu felt compelled to travel all the way outside of his district just to hold a press conference to accuse the customer who had inadvertently eaten the rodent meat of being a racist?
There is nothing wrong with what he's eating. Its very *different* from what most people usually eat in America, but that's all. I would give it a try, I don't see the big deal.
If you eating any animal it's best that the animal is killed humanely and quickly to eliminate any sustained pain or suffering i.e. as with kosher or halal meats.
The method by which a culture chooses to kill its food determines whether its people are civilized or backward barbarians.
You can always move to the third world and revel in it if you are so fascinated by those ... cultures.
So we're calling Japan third world now? Because people there eat live octopus on occasion, too.
I wonder what the rest of the world thinks of our hidden-from-view meat industry, with its antibiotics to allow overcrowding from resulting in diseased meat and its electrical shocks just before introduction to the kill floor.
The limits of the closed minds on this blog always amaze me. Anything different is to be feared, according to Krappy's Krazy Krew.
Kosher slaughter does not result in a quick death. See http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/Prefs.asp?video=agri_long

Actually, I think PETA and other American animal rights groups have thoroughly and effectively documented the animal abuse that goes on in this country. And I have featured the uncleanliness of the slaughterhouses that thrive in this city and also have written about animal cruelty and animal sacrifices that happen in my own backyard. Not sure why this would be any different.
I personally don't eat crabs, lobster, etc that is cooked alive. So I see no hypocrisy or "kraziness" in posting this.
Another case of it being wrong if Americans do it, yet somehow "vibrant and diverse" when others do it. Interesting view we have of things here, isn't it?
The flippant remark delivered with an act of abject cruelty amplifies my disgust. The octopus in the video might have a fundamental sense of itself and therefore suffered and feared:
http://www.slate.com/id/2192211/
Kosher and Halal slaughters are not humane. They are more concerned with removing blood, for the superstitious reasons of brutal and pre-scientific cultures (it's amazing what we humans hold onto long past original context), than removing suffering.
Small-scale hunting and fishing are superior to factory farming if the kill is swift and skillful. I'm appalled at the slow deaths imposed by amateurs -- go watch fish writhing on docks, boats, and piers on any given day. As one veteran fisherman with a conscience once advised, "End it, ice it."
Plenty of people across the world eat octopus, Italy, Greece, Japan, Spain, Islands of the Caribbean and Pacific. Many high-end american restaurants in the US serve octopus dishes. You will see it in many Spanish tapas bars, etc. I don't see what's the big deal here, unless you are a PETA or animal right person, which won't eat any animal.
French cuisine also has a dish where they smack the fish giving it an concussion, quickly gut the fish and cook it. Served properly, the fish should still be gasping for air.
poisson a la bleu.
Any culture with a good taste for food understands the concept of freshness.
Those who argue animal cruelty simple are ignorant to the reality of where their food comes from. Meat, fish and veggies all come from the blood and sweat of living things. There is no way we can provide what we have without there being some kind of suffering.
Pigs are bled out alive, farms hire workers who are paid barely nothing and don't even get into the beef and chicken industry.
It always amazes me that those who would push for animal rights are always the ones so disconnected from the reality of the entire food industry.
People need to eat. Count your blessings for even having food on the table.
I know that people around the world eat octopus. But most don't prepare it or eat it while it's still alive. Read this and it sounds like the sqirmers are most surely dead upon cooking. How to prepare octopus.
"Another case of it being wrong if Americans do it, yet somehow "vibrant and diverse" when others do it. Interesting view we have of things here, isn't it?"
americans can go hot pot all they want i dont see anything wrong with that. hot pot is embedded in 1000 years of history i dont see anything wrong with a lil bbq asian style. we are on top of the food chain do u want us to regress ? this is the balance of nature. in the end we'll all be food for worms and thats not very "kosher"
"I know that people around the world eat octopus. But most don't prepare it or eat it while it's still alive. Read this and it sounds like the sqirmers are most surely dead upon cooking. How to prepare octopus."
wow queens crapper i really use to be on your side...
population of china 1,330,044,544 thats just china many countries throught out asia have their versions of hot pot including japan korea vietnam thailand malaysia taiwan etc etc....
now how is that "most people" ? The U.S. Asian Population, according to the Census 2000 puts 11,898,828 asians , in the US alone. There are no world totals at this time. about one third of the total u.s. population ..... so queens crapper who's are "most people ? " cause it seems like there are a shit load of asians in this world including me who wont think twice about boiling an octopus alive
Thanks for finally revealing that Asians have no problem with eating live animals. Asians also have been known to eat cats, rats and dogs. They also have a long history of animal cruelty. China had an outbreak of a disease among dogs, and their way of dealing with it was to have their police go through the streets clubbing dogs to death while their owners watched.
I hope more Asian practices are brought to the U.S. so we can become more vibrant, diverse and worldly.
Oysters don't have brains and octopus does. Also, oysters are filthy. They grow to a tremendous size in areas where there is raw sewage. If this is someone's idea of a good meal, then they deserve the disease that comes with it.
Sik Gaek Restaurant Tony meets up with chef David Chang in Flushing, Queens. They visit Sik Gaek, an eating and drinking joint that is best described as the Korean equivalent of an izakaya. At night the line goes around the corner. Sik Gaek's biggest (literally) specialty is called a cheolpan -- a monster-sized seafood hot pot that sizzles and boils right at the table. House specialties include live octopus, intestines and every shellfish imaginable. Address: 161-29 Crocheron Ave., Flushing, Queens, NY 11358
well isn't this show to shock people with the cultures from around the world? so he comes to new york and goes to flushing and this surprises everyone. as long as your not eating the crap why do you care? i see people on my block stop and take snails home from my neigbors garden, hello do you think it's to be a pet?? i don't eat live animals but, who cares..
Sorry but the "who cares" philosophy is the reason Queens is going to hell in a handbasket.
It is wrong to eat live animals or to cause them pain and suffering. Period. It's not ok because it's cultural. Some cultures think barbaric behavior is perfectly acceptable. Let's rise above this mentality instead of taking the coward's way out. Embracing it as part of diversity because we don't want to confront the ones doing it is indeed cowardly.
Another case of it being wrong if Americans do it, yet somehow "vibrant and diverse" when others do it. Interesting view we have of things here, isn't it?
You're always chiding people for their poor reading skills, yet you yourself have failed miserably in that regard once again.
I was not saying it's wrong for one group and right for the other. Quite the contrary, I was merely pointing out that every population has its own meat culture, and its own peculiar methods of murdering the food. It's all good.
I live in queens and have had the live octopus, which mind you is very tasty. If you don't agree with the eating of it , then don't eat it. plain and simple, it all boils down to respect for other cultures and societies. There is nothing racist about any of it.

Queenscrapper,
If you are a racist, why not just come out and admit it? or should I say - call a spade, a spade.

What's your problem?
No, I think he's cooking it alive, which is also pretty disgusting and cruel.
If a giant squid caught you, it would eat you alive, wouldn't it?
Plenty of animals, especially in Corona Park last evening.

I was told a story by someone who actually witnessed an Asian woman trapping birds in Kissena Park.
She did this by ingeniously spreading a pile of pulled out audio cassette tape with birdseed or breadcrumbs in the midst of it.
Then she withdrew to a safe distance while a bird took the bait.
Immediately afterward she rushed in but the bird coulldn't fly off because it was entangled in the audiotape.
The trapped bird's neck was quickly "wrung" and the Asian woman popped the dead creature in a bag with the other corpses she'd accumulated.
Is she using the feathers, etc. to make a hat or a fan or is she going to cook them up in a proper sauce?
Then there are those enterprising restaurant workers (replete in those mini-checkered black & white pants) fishing for seagulls at Ft. Totten.
Bait on a hook they cast their lines into the air at the stone pier and swoop...down comes a gull to be hooked.
Where do they take their sacks full of gull bodies?
Better watch what kind of sliced and diced stir-fry your eating these days.
That's why I dine strictly on vegetarian dishes in local establishments.
Queenscrapper,

The guy with the squid was holding it above a boiling pot of broth ready to cook it shabu-shabu style.
How is this any different from tossing a live lobster or crab into a boiling pot of water?

Meat = dead.

Pretty sure that if an American restaurant was serving up squirming animals, there would be a PETA protest outside their front door.
