Bumbling NYPD messes up terror investigation

From the NY Post:

A suspected "al Qaeda" associate who prompted anti-terror raids on three city homes trained with the terror organization in Pakistan with several other Queens residents, The Post has learned.

The suspect, an Afghani identified only as "Najibullah," since returned to the United States and was living in Denver.

It was unclear how long he and his cohorts trained with the group or when they were there.

The Monday raids on homes Najibullah visited were aimed at finding bomb making materials — and came after he drove cross-country to Queens.

Najibullah, an Afghani, has since flown home to Colorado.

The FBI, meanwhile, is furious with the NYPD for bungled intelligence gathering that tipped off Najibullah that he was under surveillance, sources said.

Federal agents working with the Joint Terrorism Task Force asked their NYPD counterparts to discreetly gather intel on Najibullah.

Rather than slyly contact their list of sources and informants the NYPD canvassed the suspect’s old Flushing neighborhood and flashed around his picture.

Eventually the imam of the Masjid Hazrat Abu Bakr Islamic Center learned of the investigation and contacted the man’s family to let them know that he was subject of a law enforcement inquiry.

And from the Daily News:

The massive FBI probe that triggered raids in Queens is focused on a Denver-based terror cell plotting another attack on the scale of 9/11, the Daily News learned Tuesday.

Hundreds of FBI agents are on the ground in Colorado, conducting round-the-clock surveillance on five suspects - including a man who recently visited Queens, sources told The News.

New York authorities searched three Flushing apartments and detained several men - later released - after getting a warrant to look for bomb-making components, explosive powders and fuses.

Face it. NYPD is not trained for this type of investigation. Why didn't the FBI use its own assets for this?

Did the NYPD think that contacting everyone in the neighborhood wouldn't get back to the subjects?

I had an FBI observation post stationed outside my apartment building for a year and neighbors asking who they were.

Fortuantely, they did not mix with the neighbors, but the ones asking me about it were not the subject's imams.

The NYPD are some of the most incompetent "officers" on the planet. If you're IQ is too high you're not allowed to join the NYPD.

Blame that incompetence on kelly/ bberg. The diversity hiring they have instituted means midgets, welfare mothers, and persons who were born outside the U.S get first priority.

Actually, I thought about it after discovering Obama was going to be visiting New York shortly.

Perhaps they didn't have time to do the job right, but staged this farce to frighten some groups into going futher underground and staying quiet during the visit.

Nice picture.

All that is missing are the smells, noises, guys walking around in nightshirts/barefeet and women looking like extras from Lawrence of Arabia.

I want to move to that neigbhorhood, dont you? Great for property values and building a sense of community.

Don't be so quick to call the people who protect you "idiots".. they do as their told or else they get in trouble. Its the higher ups (KellY) who are to blame.. not the cops.. for example from the Daily News, "But, an NYPD investigator involved in the case said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly preferred to "act too soon rather than act too late."

Well, NYC has not been attacked since 9/11/01, so somebody must be doing something right.

As far as those who call the cops idiots, will you think that way when you are being assaulted, robbed, shot and they show up to aid you?

"anal retentive morans" I guess you don't like the Irish?
