Why cops are never around when you need them

From Mr. Angry:

Location? Top of Bear Mountain. Nearly 50 miles out of NYPD jurisdiction.

I can attest to the location because I stopped at this very spot (end of Perkins Memorial Drive) on my way home from a lovely July 4th weekend upstate. Used the blue can on the right, too! (The restrooms are undergoing renovations.)

You weren't supposed to see that. Don't worry. We know who you are and we don't like snitchers. We'll take care of you just like the informer who ratted us out on our trips to Pennsylvania for fireworks control. Power to the Sheeple!

That is probably the local Community Affairs cop(s) that are assigned to precincts and patrol boros. You know, they wear those light blue windbreakers, and tell you how low crime is at community meetigs. They don't do police work, but they can sure b.sthe public.

I was up in PA (Matamoras) this weekend - I was SO tempted to stop in one of the fireworks stores, and buy a teeshirt - leave the store, and drive across the bridge into NY - trying to get stopped

You sure there wasn't a Dunkin Donuts or 7-11 nearby?

I always wanted to ask what doughnuts have to do with police officers? I go into D&D all the time, and I see people of ALL walks of life, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, teachers, construction workers, suits etc, all ordering coffee, doughnuts, whatever. Whenever I see a cop in one of these places, they are usually ordering coffee. I don't get the whole doughnut/cops thing. Can anyone help?

Maybe the officer was looking for a private, peaceful place to take a dump...?

Why didn't they just stop off at College Point...NYC's favorite dumping ground?

so quick to assume the worst of the pd, did you notice there are no pct or assignment markings on the van and no plate which means it is unassigned. Did mr angry report this as a possible fake vehicle, or is it possible it was donated or bought from an outter state dealer who agreed to decal the van with basics but not specifics? where were the cops?

He explained that he blacked them out so as not to get the cops in trouble. Read the link provided.

meant out of state

NYC has certain jurisdiction outside of the city - like the resivoirs. I don't know for sure, but it is possible that they NYPD could have had business up there.

This is at very the top of the mountain where there is nothing but a scenic overlook and a tower to get a better look. You can see all the way to Manhattan from up here. It's a great spot for tourists, but I would guess not the best spot for police business. Unless they got a tip that NYers were buying fireworks here.

If it has a great view of Manhattan as you state, it could also be a great spot for the NYPD to conduct surveillance on the city skyline.

Queens Crapper said...

The City is 40 miles from there.

Italian and Irish criminals make up the NYPD.

It's possible that they could have legitimate business up - POSSIBLE -not necessarily probable.

It was a 200% real, brand new NYPD van. Not a movie prop, but it didn't have a pct assignment next to the number, either.

They passed me going northbound up the palisades.

No idea where the officer/s were. Didn't see them up there & unless they hiked down a trail, I'm assuming they were out of uniform.

Could be the mechanics from the good old Maspeth police garage. Someone told me once that the mechanics were required to be cops to prevent sabotage.

Could be the Explorers Youth Program. They do events up state where they go away for the weekend. Don't be so quick to jump to a negative conclusion.. then you wonder why they treat most people like shit

Anonymous said...

The summer program began on Monday, July 6, and will end on Thursday August 13. So I guess it wasn't that.

Who knows and who cares. If I were there I would be glad to see that van, it may deter someone who was up to no good.

Anonymous said...

Yes, because the top of Bear Mountain is a hotbed of illegal activity. And you should care if your tax dollars are being wasted on someone's joyride.

You cannot take a pd vehicle outside nyc without prior approval of 1pp. You would get suspended for 30 days and be placed on dismissal probation. The ez pass records of all nypd vehicles are scrutinized monthly.Even the third world dolts the pd is hiring would know better than to leave nyc with a pd vehicle.

"Anonymous" who posted about the possibility of this being for the Explorers Program got verbally jumped by the next poster, who I'll call Anon #2.

Anon #2 didn't think about the planning that goes into a program like that, i.e., accomodations. Don't assume.

It's possible the cops were participating in some training course or orientation for cops out of city, so unless you know the circumstances, it's nothing more than a funny sight.

Also, for security reasons, some things are best discussed in out of the way locations. I

I am sure that if an important informant on a New York case preferred to be interviewed on top of Bear Mountain, instead of while standing on a traffic island in Times Square, he would be accommodated.

One would think an unmarked car would be used for out-of-town business.
