Vendors protest against Helen Sears

From NY1:

A Queens councilwoman is being met with opposition over a plan to create vendor-free zones in Jackson Heights.

Rafael Samanez is with Vamos Unidos, who helped organize the rally. "When they say that vendors - a lot are immigrants - are dirty, that they bring rats, that's very anti-immigrant. That's very racist to say that."

The protesters say Councilwoman Helen Sears and other groups in Jackson Heights want to create vendor-free zones along 37th Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue, something they say will throw them out of business.

Jackson Heights is one of the filthiest neighborhoods in Queens, second only to downtown Flooshing. So now it appears that wanting to improve the quality of life in Queens is anti-immigrant. In what way do these people think that unlimited numbers of largely undocumented, uneducated, unskilled immigrants are desirable?

Good! Put them out of business. There shouldn't be a vendor in an area that sells similar items. The vendors have much less overhead than the brink and mortar stores. Its not right! Vendor carts should be in places that don't have many businesses like shipping districts and warehouse areas where they are needed.

i think this is funny, do they even have the proper permits to have their carts on the streets? i think they should clean up all the areas and start giving out fines. oh and are we suppose to feel sorry if she put them out of business? who cares! clean up all of NYC too many venders and especially ones without the proper permits to do so.

Good idea. They serve no interest and block sidewalks and undercut legitmate businesses.

Funny how the tweeding press gives THESE people and THIS issue coverage, yet almost nothing on noise, filth, illegal conversions, and developer abuse.

Ask them for a green card, and as quick as you can say adios muchacho they are gone!!

Why do legit restaurants get hammered by the board of health and these truck/carts operate 24/7 with no worries? Gotta keep those undocumented types filled with cheap food after they drink all night in those wonderful establishments on Roosevelt ave all night.

oh no the illegal aliens won't be able to work tax free while their wives collect every known government benefit for the jack pot babies.

If they have the appropriate permits and serve clean food, leave them alone. Otherwise, away with them!

Stores and restaurants don't need unfair competition during these hard times, but if someone jumps through the legal hoops and keeps a clean cart his name should not be unfairly blackened.

why does everyone speculate that all street vendors are operating illegally?

Besides, the illegal ones are the most "out there" food. I am sick of seeing the stupid nut lady everywhere. Give me some huitlacoche.

The good businesses will thrive. Coatzingo on roosevelt does a fine job selling tacos, so does Tacos Veloz. If American Chicken goes out, they deserve it. Maybe the landlords should lower the rents?

Roosevelt Avenue is absolutely disgusting, and its all coming up to 37th Ave as well, lets clean up get these people off the streets if they have no permits and really what about all these illegal conversions? What ever happened to rules?

Jackson Heights is known for their street vendors. Of course here comes the development of overpriced condos and a lot of out of towners trying to convert jackson Heights into a suburb. Hello! this is New York City. Street vendors have every right to be in state property, the sidewalk. A lot of xenophobes on this site! Go back to Indiana.

I live on 37th Avenue. Currently the street vendors are out of control. It's not an issue of race, of anti-immigration. The street vendor explosion is encouraging garbage, noise, congestion, and for those unlicensed food vendors, a potential health catastrophe. Many times, I've seen roasted pigs heads on the barbie, with nary refrigeration nor water for sanitation nearby. After a Sunday on the Avenues (Roosevelt or 37th) or on 82nd Street, the area looks like an explosion at Fresh Kills landfill, especially now that there's no garbage pickup on Sundays. and non-food vendors are often selling illegal knock-offs which is clearly a legal NO. So let's stop muddying the waters with all this "racist, anti-immigrant" talk and call it what it is, a fabric of life catastrophe. My husband and I are both from immigrant families, don't we have a right to see laws enforced? We've invested our life savings in JH because we heard it was such a diversity "paradise", but this is only if you don't criticize anything, even if laws exist to back you up. This PC stuff is unproductive and dangerous for everyone who lives in JH, and plainly unfair.
