Thompson catches double-dippers

From the Daily News:

New city audits have found 39 city retirees double-dipping with new public jobs - and pulling in some $600,000 in improper pension payments, the Daily News has learned.

"Immediate action ... is needed to investigate and recoup, if appropriate, any improper payments made to these retirees identified as possible 'double-dippers,'" auditors from City Controller William Thompson's office wrote.

The retirees were not named, but included a retired assistant district attorney collecting a $69,660 pension on top of a $99,100 consulting contract for the state courts.

Also cited was a retired police captain who earned $51,246 as a city teacher on top of a $55,622 pension and a retired teacher with a $55,882 pension who also worked an FDNY office job for $76,490.

Retired city workers generally cannot claim pension benefits if they take another city or state job, though some are allowed to do so if they obtain waivers.

Some retirees caught double-dipping can apply for retroactive waivers - or else they will have their improper payments deducted from future pension checks.

public employee unions, and specifically the ridiculously generous and easy to scam pension plans, are ruining this city

Please, working for 20+ years and retiring then taking another job and getting paid to work is not stealing, most of these people just did not fill out the proper paper work. Please go back to talking about real problems like Bicyclists stopping at a red light then proceeding or a working stiff picking up his daughter at school.

So you are suggesting that it is not stealing if you don't get caught??!??! Then it can be made OK if the proper paperwork is filed and they pay a penalty. Seems to me that it is wrong to double dip in the first place. The perpetrators should have known better and not take advantage of the system or better yet, file the waivers right from the start.

No I am not suggesting that it is not stealing if you don't get caught nor do I suggest that they should not have to fill out the appropriate forms. I am saying that to label someone a thief because they worked for 20 years as a cop earned their pension and now works as a teacher is wrong.

I really enjoy this site because it points out so many of the things that are wrong with our great borough and gives a voice to many who would not be heard otherwise. What bothers me is that instead of talking about real problems there is so many instances of perceived problems like having to chose between hospitals or bike lanes. It is these kind of distractions that causes the focus to be removed from real issues so that the crooks(pols) can get away with real crimes. If I want a distraction or blow hard story I'll read the Post/News.

I applaud Crapper for the work he puts in to this site and for trying to make Queens a better place I think that is something we all want.

as far as Troll well..I did not post anon

It IS stealing if the person intentionally did not fill out the appropriate forms. Many people feel that they won't get caught and can fly under the radar. This costs all of us taxpayers in the long run and it is wrong. It is about time that someone brought this to the public's attention.
