Maspeth wants fewer trucks and more parks

This past Saturday, Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley, Councilman Tony Avella, representatives of Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez and State Senator Joe Addabbo, 3 Assembly candidates, local residents and civic groups gathered at the Clinton Diner in Maspeth to protest Waste Management's plan to truck garbage to the neighborhood instead of loading it directly onto the rail next to their property for shipment out of state.

They also called on Mayor Bloomberg to acquire the former site of St. Saviour's Church as a public park. Interestingly, the site is listed on PlaNYC's website as an ideal potential site for a park as identified by respondents to surveys.

The Assembly candidates suggested using eminent domain to acquire the park and filing an environmental lawsuit to stop the WM plan.

Although WM has been stating publicly that 50 sanitation trucks a day would enter their transfer station on Review Avenue and 65 a day would truck garbage to the Maspeth Railyard, the EIS for the project mentions 81 and 144 respectively.

The cockamamie WM plan is no surprise as members of the Vallone family, including Peter Sr. and Paul, have thus far accepted $1M from Waste Management to lobby the city for the project. Here's a sample lobbying report from 2005; they have represented the company from 2002 until now.

Re-instate the 2-way toll on the VZ bridge. That will take a lot of truck traffic off the Gowanus and the Bklyn side of the BQE. If the conspiracy theorists(i don't want to be traced by my ez pass) still refuse to get an EZ pass, fuck'em.

When I have spoken at "candidates nights" about the fact that Paul Vallone and his father have received millions of dollars as lobbyists for developers and companies like Waste Management, and that the same evil doers are financing Paul's campaign, Paul has questioned my "integrity" and stated that he will not participate in an "attack campaign."

I am getting the word out but I need help! Even if you support one of the other candidates in my race, we must make our voices heard! We cannot allow the developers and special interests to "buy" our city council seat with the intent of destroying our communities while lining their own pockets.

Who does Maspeth think it is...College Point?

Why not? Looks like they are getting dumped on just like CP and they also have Avella trying to fight it.

Where was Bob and Tony? Why did they not speak?

Pictures can be powerful words.

Go to Astoria, and take pictures of empty stores on Steinway Street, buildings being milked to death by abentee landlords, El Mundo discount and the sleazy hookah places, day laborers encamped in front of the library on Broadway, horrid new buildings, Old Astoria Village, Shore Towers,

and post them on your website contrasting that mess with a similar picture in your area of a place not yet ruined.

Lead the series with Vallone$ picture on a construction fence.

Powerful statement....

Then ask the community if this is what they want because that is what they are getting....

Exactly my point. Neighborhoods need to wake up and see that the issues that they face are not unique. Tony Avella for mayor! He is truly a fighter for the people and will stop Bloomturd's insanity and thwart corrupt developers and politicians.

If you are talking about Tony Avella or Tony Nunziato they are both in the video speaking. Bob Holden didn't come.

Good, I like Tony and wish him well.

Thanks for the ideas!

I have to admit it is frustrating that the press doesn't pick this up. It is so obvious that Paul Vallone's candidacy is an attempt at a coup d'etat of District 19 by the developers and real estate special interests. They pay Paul and Daddy Vallone millions of dollars and then finance Paul's candidacy with tens of thousands of dollars.

My grassroots/netroots campaign continues to fight through our small contributions and our legion of volunteers.

Steve, get your people to write to the press, or ask questions with the cameras rolling.

The stuff will get out to the public - as well as the stacked deck playing field.

Nothing makes a bug - or a hack - run like turning on the lights.

Funny how boro hall ignores st saviours when it was at its original location, but has millions to build it somewhere else with about 1/4 of the orginal fabric.

why dont you show the picture from the berry on what is original and what is bogus in the new building?

Notice how the Vallone$ go apeshit every time a waste transfer station is suggested for their corner of Astoria.

Which is about once every two or three years.

god please do not give us yet another vallone in politics. We will have to commit mass suicide.

I thought I read somewhere Vallone has some kind of fatal disease but says he's in remission or something. Did I read right? And that's one of the reasons he stayed with his family so long in Astoria.

Another reason to vote against the guy. He could drop dead!

Sarcoidosis.

Here's a mention.

And what pray tell was Ms. Crowley doing there? The same woman who was involved in the St. Saviour fiasco, is now trying to save the land for use as a park. Give us all a break Crapper.

Other than make one dumb comment to a local paper in an attempt to make herself look smart about Cross Harbor, I don't see how Liz participated in the St. Saviour's fiasco. She wasn't in a position of power in 2006 when the battle began and wasn't even in office when the church was dismantled. Juniper Civic's officers supported her efforts to become councilwoman so she must have taken the right position on this issue.

Crowley made improvement of the environment and creation of more green space in the area a major issue of her campaign. Apparently someone wasn't paying attention.

I like Baldeo's white suit. was he wearing decks?

George Sarcoidosis?

Isn't that the Astoria based contractor that did the stucco work on Pissstilli's buildings?

Vallone wants a shapeup hall for all the day laborers he uses.

What can't Pistilli pay for it ... and how much does Pistilli give back to the community considering that he takes so much out of it?

Noticed that Tom Ognibene didn't show up for this. Does he not care about trucks or parks in Maspeth?

Anonymous said...

Yeah really. George Onorato - of all people - sent a statement but Ognibene was a no-show?
