Mike Bloomberg: Champion of Queens landmarking

From the Queens Chronicle:

Bloomberg started by giving encouragement to residents who want to see a 91-building section of the neighborhood receive landmarking status from the Landmarks Commission.

“Those of you who want landmarking, I think you’re going to get what you want,” he told the audience. “Ridgewood’s history needs to be preserved and celebrated.”

The area is important because it illustrates the development of one of the most influential and successful model tenement neighborhoods in the city. Known as the Mathews Flats, the buildings were developed by the G.X. Mathews Company and constructed between 1908 and 1911.

Bloomberg said the commission is expected to vote on the proposal in September. In addition, he said it is likely more of the area will be considered for designation shortly.

The Landmarks Commission is planning to hold a hearing in September on designatiing 212 buildings that would be part of the Ridgewood South Historic District.

If only Mayor Bloomberg's position on landmarking applied equally throughout Queens.

HEY MAYOR MIKE...
WE'RE STILL WAITING FOR OUR DESERVING, HISTORIC BROADWAY/FLUSHING NEIGHBORHOOD...THAT'S ALREADY A NATIONAL & STATE HISTORIC DISTRICT...TO BE CALANDERED BY YOUR LPC TO BECOME A MUNICIPAL DISTRICT BEFORE NOVEMBER.

OTHERWISE DON'T COUNT ON GETTING MANY VOTES HERE!

WE COMPRISE AN APPROXIMATE 2,000
VOTING BLOCK AND
WE THINK YOU'RE RATHER FOOLISH IF YOU CONTINUE TO IGNORE US!

The Ridgewood disrict is comprised of row housing which the LPC prefers to designate over suburban type free standing houses.

They're not only Manhattan biased, but row housing biased as well!

Even though its residents overwhelmingly support the creation of a municipal historic district...Broadway/Flushing will be getting the shaft on landmarking because of the small (but paid attention to by Bloomberg) Korean lobby that is against it.

Asians (that covers all subgroups including southeast Asians) comprise only about 12% of the residents in this internationally composed neighborhood.

There's a certain urban planner who would disagree with the influence that this small group of Koreans have on the Broadway/Flushing landmark move.

Perhaps he can't see the forest for the trees by being too close to the planning diagrams and figures.

If one steps back and views the scene from a worldwide perspective...the picture changes radically.
