Daily News calls comptroller candidates "the 4 weenies"

Roll call of cowardice: The controller candidates are a bunch of weenies
Daily News editorial

Three of the four City Council members in the Democratic primary for city controller are cowardly weenies. The fourth is just a weenie.

Running for the office charged with maintaining a tight grip on the municipal budget, they're all terrified of taking on municipal labor unions. As was made plain by their performance in debate Tuesday morning.

Each was asked whether pension benefits should be modestly scaled back for new hires. Gov. Paterson is urging this reform, called Tier 5, and has won state labor cooperation. Mayor Bloomberg estimates the proposed trims would save $200 million a year to start, billions a year down the road.

Yet three would-be controllers, John Liu, David Weprin and Melinda Katz, said they were committed to continuing excessive and unaffordable retirement benefits for new city workers.

The fourth, David Yassky, had the fortitude to say Tier 5 should be on the table. But he went weenie by refusing to support it wholeheartedly.

None would risk losing labor support. Never mind that the price to taxpayers starts at $200 million. They know who's buttering their bread.

From what we've seen at "the baths" Liu's weenie is the smallest.

(Never you mind all that stuff about Johnny being married with a son).
