3 Queens synagogues to be placed on the National Register

From Fox 5:

The New York State Board for Historic Preservation issued its recommendations Thursday after property owners, municipalities and organizations across the state submitted nominees.

Properties listed on the state and national registers can be eligible for public preservation programs and matching government tax credits.

Queens County:
Rego Park Jewish Center, Rego Park – a modernist synagogue built in 1948 to serve the fast growing Jewish population of Rego Park.

Astoria Center of Israel, Astoria – one of the few surviving early 20th century synagogues in Queens, built in 1925-26 when the Jewish population was small.

Free Synagogue of Flushing, Flushing – a 1927 Neo-Classical Revival synagogue established as part of the "Free Synagogue" movement.

It's a good thing they put the Astoria Synagogue on the list, every other building on their block has been demolished in the last 5 years or so.

Mazel Tov!

Jews dominate New York City in almost every aspect.

I am not a Jew, but I respect them. Proportionate to their size in the community, they donate far more to charity.

They have led the fight against racism and abuse of workers, and the Old Testament underlies both Christianity and Islam.

I believe in the ten commandments and Western law, which has borrowed heavily from them.

Jews do not frighten me, nor do Blacks, Asians or anyone else. My family fought for Freedom against totalitarian oppression and I will never let anyone mock American values or abuse American Citizens.

Mazel Tov! Especially concerning the Free Synagogue of Flushing, which is surrounded by uncontrollable development on all sides.

And, fortunately, Anti-Semites like you don't.

How was that statement anti-Semitic?

Calling someon anti semetic is like throwing mud. The real victim is the accused (the that is now muddy).

Anti gentilism is a more serious topic seeing as the torah promotes and advocates the mistreatment of gentiles.

And it also says in Exodus, you will not harrass the foreigner, remember you were foreigners in another's land.

Also the Jewish tradition says, "You shall not muzzle the oxen that treadeth out the corn." In other words, pay workers their wages.

I have never experienced any problems with Jews and I am as Catholic as the Pope.

Stating that "Jews dominate New York City in almost every aspect" has been an anti-semitic slander for generations. The Nazis loved to say things like that.

Tell me, how do we dominate New York City in almost every respect?

Curl up and die haters. This came out of a survey by a private group (the Landmarks Conservancy) using volunteer labor. If some Queens hysterical society got it together to do something similarly constructive, there would be more landmarks in Queens.

Queens groups have made a list of landmark worthy structures time and again. What good has it done?

I think that it is excellent that the Nazis chose to expose themselves. This proves that dangerous hate groups still exist and that the public needs to be warned.

Nazis remember, Hitler lies dead in the bunker after killing half the youth of Germany. If you admire him so much, feel free to commit suicide as well. Preferably before involving others.

We personally submitted a request for evaluation (RFE) to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission about 20 years ago for the architecturally splendid Flushing Free Synagogue.

It was repeatedly ignored!

The RKO Keith's Flushing theater is still listed (in its entirety) on the national Register of Historic Places.

A lot it did for this treasured site.

Only municipal landmark status keep a building from being demolished.

Furthermore, by law, the interior (containing the sanctuary) of any house of worship cannot be designated. Only its exterior can.

Ah, yes. Welcome to cliche world.

Now name them. And before you start with government, answer this:

How many NYC Mayors have been Jewish?
How many comptrollers?
How many City Council President/Public advocates?
How many Borough Presidents?

In reality, no more than any other group.

And talking about behind the scenes: How many Deomcratic County Leaders in queens?
