It just got a little easier to bike, sightsee and eat your way through Queens.
The city published a biking map last week dubbed "Queens Around the World," with several routes that allow cyclists to soak in notable sites and local cuisine.
City Planning Commissioner Amanda Burden called it an ultimate insider's guide.
"The rich diversity of our neighborhoods make the city different from other cities in the world," Burden said. "This gives people destinations and shows them how to get there."
Funded by federal grant dollars, the map is part of a larger campaign to get more New Yorkers to use bicycles as a means of transportation. Burden said plans for a Bronx map are in the works and hopes to create similar ones for the other boroughs.
The Queens map includes four routes with highlights from nine different neighborhoods in the borough.
Let's see... biking, restaurants, soaking in vibrant diversity...we know who this is geared toward. I am offended that tax money went into producing this garbage. Air quality is not going to improve because a yupster pedals his ass from LIC to Corona for empanadas instead of taking the train. How about getting the trucks off Grand Avenue so I don't choke on diesel fumes when I go to the supermarket? DOT already got federal money for that but hasn't done squat with it.

The route on the map goes thru the heaviest pedal to the metal traffic in Queens, which as a cyclist I take pains to avoid. Of course my routes skirt the most 'diverse' parts of Queens.

I like the little loop past the developments on the East River - the same place where the waterfront community center/boathouse is planned for the Tower People that will soon will be cutting off the waterfront from the community again (and the morons in Astoria are too stupid to fight).

This posted on another thread bears repeating. It should be sent to every civic and community board in Western Queens that idly accepts waterfront development.
It will be the death knell of the rest of the boro. Should be a seperate thread:

Since you are so concerned with the environment and reducing car traffic, I assume you are now for tolling the bridges and increasing toll prices during rush hour?
I'm concerned about the real cause of congestion - trucks. Cross Harbor will take them off the roads of Manhattan and put them all in Queens and congestion pricing wouldn't reduce them either.
Come on, Crappy, its also a double digit population surge.
No one, I repeat, no one, has the foggiest notion as to how many people and who lives here. All we have is what our senses tell us:
Where there used to be two or three cars at a light we have five or six.
Now add to this another 50% with the Mayors2030 Plan for Queens.
And where there were one family houses there are now 6-families....
Yeah...park your bike in Elmhurst while you're sampling some local "cuisine" and you'll find it stolen!
Let's face it...nobody comes to Queens unless they can't afford the rest of NYC!

Crappy, your thinking is clouded. The real cause of congestion is too many vehicles of ALL KINDS on the roads.
Trucks take up the same amount of space that 3 or 4 cars would. And there are way too many of them on our local roads. Period.
Seriously, Crappy, how exactly do you propose we avoid trucks on local streets? And if you don't want trucks on Grand Ave, where do you propose they go instead? Side streets? Residential streets?
The Grand Avenue Truck Bypass Plan was already approved by the NYC DOT, but has not been implemented yet.
Problem solved (if only Janette gets off her bike and cares to enact it). The money was allocated by Congressman Weiner for it.
Might I add, it's been on DOT's slate since Iris Weinshall was commissioner. The excuse is...?
