Residential parking permits?

From the Daily News:

Residential parking permits may yet become a reality for parking-strapped city neighborhoods.

Two Brooklyn lawmakers are hoping legislation they introduced to the state Legislature that would allow the city to implement the permits will pass next month.

"Residents will be able to park near their homes without circling endlessly for a space," said state Sen. Daniel Squadron (D-Brooklyn Heights).

Squadron proposed the bill in January along with Assemblywoman Joan Millman (D-Brooklyn Heights).

If the bill passes, the city and individual neighborhoods would decide whether they want the residential permits, which wouldn't be allowed on commercial strips and would cover 80% of residential neighborhood streets.

The permits became controversial three years ago when a study by the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership found permits weren't feasible because there was less than one spot in Brooklyn Heights for every four registered cars in the area.

As is the case in every other city neighborhood. What's changed since 3 years ago?

If there are more neighborhood cars than neighborhood parking spaces, then how exactly is this plan expected to work?

Before they decide to implement this assinine idea, why don't they crack down on all the illegal basement apartment dwellers who all have cars? There aren't enough spaces for tenants with legal apartments and homes. What are they going to do about all the overdevelopment -- like when they tear down a 1 family house and put in two 2 family ones? There aren't enough parking spaces. Why should we have to pay on the same city streets that we pay taxes on?

Of course this won't work, for the reason specified. But that won't stop them from implementing it. It's just another revenue-producing scheme by Mayor Moneybucks & Company. That's all that matters.

This is an Upper East Side initiative by Friends of Bloomie. (Also endorsed by F Hill Gardens)Much of NYC policy is made over dinner at the BBerg's. A blue-haired, rich, old crone will speak up,"I live on Madison Avenue and my doorman from Queens gets in early and parks his car RIGHT IN FRONT. Why is he allowed to do that?" And so Bloomie takes action, as always leading with his ass." If this guy is reelected we definitely will have congestion pricing and a few other things slipped in with it.

People - Dump him or the city will be unaffordable to the common man. We have an opportunity to dump his ass. Please, please, please, do the right thing and send him back to Boston where he belongs.

How about owners get preference over tenants?

lmao, it's amazing how many illegals drive around in sooooo many cars. so if this was to past they won't be able to park anywhere. when i use the word illegal, i mean renters not race. if the home owners get first choice, which means if you own a two family you'll be able to get two permits. i would love this to happen, especially in queens, then the teachers would have to use transit.... :)

How would you differentiate who the owner was and who the renter was? You can't. The illegal renters would show false documents or better yet, people would steal the permits out of the cars. It would be worse than having your GPS system or stereo in plain sight. Dump this idea -- pronto!

well the permits would be given to the owners of the properties, which is not a simple task to fraud, and then you have it matched up with you cars, say like e-z pass knows the tags when driving. (the tag matches with the car you register). also when the police runs your plate they know if you live in front of your house, also there has to be a way to add that simple step into the system, so it could be a simple check. robbing, have it be stickers that you place inside your car, what are they going to do break a window to peel off a sticker, doubt it.

This may not "work" in the sense of guaranteeing a spot for every resident with a car. But if a fee were imposed it might encourage some hobbyist car-owners to sell, and it would punish outsiders who take neighborhood spots.

Couldn't really hurt, could it?

Owners have something in their file cabinets called "deeds", tenants don't. They have leases. who said anything about "illegals"?

Who said the City will only give them to owners? That was just a suggestion.

Linda, you are assuming that the police will actually come to Maspeth to check the permits. That's a funny one. Haven't seen a cop in these parts in months. We pay taxes. The streets should be free for anyone to park on them. What happens if you have visitors? Where do they park? This is just a money making scheme to make the middle class move out of New York. It's disgusting!

your right what the hell was i thinking, it may be the heat today. we don't have cops in maspeth! ok had an ice coffee and feel alot better

NO TO PERMITS........

Linda, you are the voice of reason. I'm going to Connolly's for dinner tonight and will have a drink in your honor. Maspeth needs more people like you who will stand up for our town. They better not start with this permit crap in residential neighborhoods. This is just another injustice and another thing to fight.

wow, i'm so flattered thank you.
guess living in maspeth for 22 years makes you want to get out and scream half the times. we deal with alot of crap here with two schools, and now possibly a third. let's not forget about the amount of traffic from the big trucks, mta transit, garbage and no respect for the elderly. hopefully change will come soon. enjoy yourself at connelly's great family owns it and respects our community.

thanks again......:)

hmm... do I have the feeling that this is somehow tied into bike lanes and the fact that we are to ditch our car for bikes?

Likley a trick to pave the way for MASSIVE imminent domain and "big brother" abuse.

It blows my mind how much the city feeds its middle class shit who thinks its a meal.

Whats next licence plate scanners and data transmitters on every streetlight ?

Gov. Paterson is already working on the license plates. Get ready for $300 DMV passenger car renewals.

I have to keep the sidewalk in front of my house clean or risk a ticket, I have to shovel the snow within a few hours of its stopping or risk a ticket, I have to have a tree in place or planted in front of my house or else and now "residential parking permits"..I don't think so. It's bad enough I pay exorbitant RE taxes and now I should feel privileged to park my car somewhere NEAR my house. What's this going to cose me? What about all those folks who park their cars across their driveways and make it their very own private parking spot. Will this law stop that? What a laugh that proposal is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeh, right....

How about disabled or elderly get first dibs and the rest have to move their asses?

I rent. I don't have a car right now, but I'm as entitled to park as anyone. My rent pays my landlord's property taxes. My income taxes fund the city. Too bad if you can't vacuum the last dollar out of my pocket.
