Newtown High School & the '39 World's Fair

Olde Elmhurst has a nice aerial shot. What an amazing view during an amazing era.

If they had just left the train lines they established for this fair, the city would have saved a lot of money.

grew up at a time when there was a worlds fair somewhere around the world every few years.
what has happened to us that we barely ever celebrate the future?

Uh, they still hold them. A recent list:
2000 in Germany
2005 in Japan
2008 in Spain
2010 in China

Maybe everyone's too self-absorbed these days to pay attention...

You are probably exactly right.
Was just talking to someone the other day about how what we see on the news is so focused on the US. Very little about what goes on in the rest of the world seems to seep in.

When were these fairs shown or announced on the news? What was their focus? See any commercials for them? You can't blame people for not knowing about them if they aren't well publicized.

What a great photo. My mom, born in 1920, graduated from NHS in 1938, I think.

Queens looks so bucolic, so peaceful, so beautiful in this picture.

I too wish I could have seen it at that time.

Put your pants back on, QC.
Nobody's blaming or investigating you for this lack of publicity. As ew-3 (and you) suggests, there must have been a failure to get the news out here in the US. But that, to me, is a clear indication of where our national attention is and is not focused. We love our "reality" TV, we don't care so much about the rest of the world, and our networks and their advertisers understand that.

Or. Perhaps international relations have very little to do with it. Maybe it's just that technological innovation has accelerated to the point that Futurama is now passe.

But as I said, they still hold World's Fairs, or Expos or what have you, every few years. If anyone's interested. Have I been to any of them? No.
