Strange bedfellows

You know things are bad when your civic's honorees consist of a low level member of the Queens Machine and an illiterate realtor.

Although I've always been kind of fond of Woodsite and Elmuhurst. Any of you live in a "surrounded area"?

At least in the Judge's time and in his Father's day no one dared sh*t on Astoria. See how times have changed.

BECAUSE IN THOSE DAYS PEOPLE HAD A VESTED LONG TERM INTEREST IN ASTORIA.

TODAY ITS LITTLE MORE THAN A KENTUCKY HILLTOP THAT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED FOR COAL.

That is most interesting. Astoria is about to go through a major upzone (except the area north of Grand Central that is being downzoned) and his puppet 'civic' is honorinig a real estate developer.

Kind of makes sense that the developement patterns of the past five years seemed to have anticipated the rezoning.

We bet it was leaked to the developers years before the public had a chance to see it.

And in typical fashion, the new plan is presented to the community as done. No questions. No wasting time in asking 'what to you want?'

But since you are treated like some dumb Greek/Italian/[place your group here] peasant, there is little reason to trouble you or expect you to think on what is happening.

This is it. This is what we are doing.

And of course, we need to speed this along so don't waste your time discussing it. We will either ignore you or yes you to death - then go ahead and do what we want to do anyway.

Hmmm...

is Brenda not on Councilman Vallone's staff?

... does the number go into the councilman's office?

Hmmm...

The "surrounded" reference refers to areas surrounded by illiterate morons.

Actually, there will be a huge community forum at Riccardos on May 5th at 7PM where City Planning will show the results of their study and listen to community input. In addition, City Planning has presented twice to the community board already as well as some other smaller civic groups.

I am confused. Do you mean another monstrous upzoning beyond what we are already seeing or do you mean the completion of what is already going on?

I have lived to see houses that were ancient in my Grandmother's time destroyed.

The lots are way too tiny for the buildings, and people are getting hurt.

If you don't sell to these people, they simply demolish your property and threaten your life while building two inches from you.

I would also like to know how our streets will handle the traffic, how Astoria General (now Mt. Sinai)
will handle both the new people and the overflow from the closed hospitals, how we will fit all the new children into schools, how we will provide electricity off a grid that is already failing?

These concerns listed above are exactly why the Council Member requested that City Planning conduct a zoning study of the area. To the contrary, much of our neighborhood faces the possibility of a downzoning. Perhaps you should attend on May 5th to have your concerns addressed.

First of all, cheap shots and personal digs rarely get people anywhere in life so...good luck to the initial bloggers....

Secondly, I don't know if you actually live in Astoria, but hop on a subway once in awhile and you'll see how popular Astoria has become. It's thriving!

From what I have read about the rezoning, it will be moderate and keep the natural character of the neighborhood we all love....and let's say, it will not resemble Kentucky!...what an obscure reference.

I must admit that I have felt surrounded here in Woodside for at least the past ten years, and it is only getting worse.

Like Kentucky, outsiders come in, dig a big hole, take what the can, and leave the natives with a shit sandwich.

The people are left clueless, ignorant and powerless.

The upzoning will enshrine that once an out of character building is in a block, that is what everyone else can expect.

9, 15 story buildings will go up with impunity.

The only reason that a rezoning is going on is to protect those hot heads up near Ditmars.

But, holding in character, once everything south of Grand Central is ruined, they will spot variance the sacred ground north of it.

But that is for later.

A dog and pony show. That community board will rubber stamp anything.

How can there be balance in the political process if the Vallones are always hanging with those Pistillis and honoring blockbusters?

No talk about infrastructure (that will come 'later.'

Massive development along the elevated (that will attract an upscale crowd to live here)

No talk about walling off the waterfront.

No talk about special historic districts like Steinway or Norwood Gardens (no guys, you need to landmark those areas - if anyone tells you this 'rezoning' will protect your block they are lying to you - to put it bluntly)

Isn't this the same team that ruined Dutch Kills and Long Island City?

Oh yes, Astoria is so popular? With the carpetbaggers. Do you presume to know more about his neighborhood than someone living here nearly 50 years, the third generation of my family by the way.

I have something to compare the present with. You don't. If Astoria hasn't been turned into a giant construction site, its not for want of trying.

Why don't you speak to your neighbors who have had the homes destroyed around their heads, the teants driven out, the neighbors whose properties have been endangered by careless and illegal practices.

I thank Catherine for the heads up. I live 5 minutes from Ricardos and I intend to show up and burn some ears.

Lady whose floors and ceilings now inhabit only 2 dimensions, that is to say a flat plane instead of a cube.

They will make mincemeat out of you.

They will pay off prodevelopment types who will be quoted by the paper on how wonderful things are.

No, they won't make mincemeat out of me. I survived over 2 years of terroristic attack by my landlord, ceilings dropped on my head, no heat, too much heat, no electricity, no cooking gas, attempted false arrest, people waiting outside my door and jumping at me.

I am bringing down a few tough mothers who survived this with me and a few neighbors who had their homes destroyed and we are going to rock their house.

I have been to plenty of community board meetings over the city where irate groups come in ... then things fizzle out.

Believe me, these guys would have not been in power generation after generation unless they figured out how to handle protest well, handily.

You need to set up a permanent opposition cause these developers have permament access to your taxes that should go to make your life better, but instead makes them rich and you miserable.

You need to join a group that can bring in people from other communities that have had your experience, and have found solutions to your problems:

Unity is Strength!

Thank you for the suggestion. I was not aware of the LICalliance. I intend to join and tell all my neighbors to join also. Nothing will politicize one like living the nightmare.

Man those Vallones are a talented musical family! Tina on the sax, Junior on the guitar, Paul on the drums, Perry on the kazoo, and the Old Man himself, the Fred Astaire of Swing-dancing!

BTW Did you all know that State Senator Malcolm Smith is one helluva a jive swing dancer?

By the way, thanks for using the whole name of LICalliance. Someone suggested I get in contact with LICA, and this is also the acronym for the Long Island City Contractors Association, not a group I want to contact unless it is with a basket of rotten tomatoes.

Anonymous said...

And avoid LICCA, Long Island City Cultural Alliance, a group of institutions controlled by waterfrtont developers that is the first wave of a self contained waterfront neighborhood along the East River.

Check out the boards of some of their member organizations.

Maybe we can invite the lady buried under the collapsed staircase if she is well enough to attend. I want to know how we are supposed to go full stop ahead with more development in the face of such recent carnage.

I seriously doubt that the building in questions was not cited for violations, or would have been cited if not for the benjamin blindfolds.
