WILLETS POINT UNITED TAKING MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS SPONSORING CLEANUP ON FRIDAY, MARCH 27th AT NOON
Willets Point United Against Eminent Domain Abuse is organizing a cleanup of garbage dumped along the streets of Willets Point, Queens, beginning this Friday, March 27th at 12 noon. The trucks will start in front of Crown Container, 126-46 34th Avenue.
“The City of New York has refused to provide us with sanitation services for decades, despite the fact that each business here pays tens of thousands of dollars in taxes annually,” said Jerry Antonacci, President of Willets Point United.
“It’s a shame that we have to take matters into our own hands because of neglect by the City,” said Jake Bono, Spokesperson for Willets Point United. “We have been calling in dumping complaints for years, but the Department of Sanitation refuses to respond and clean up the mess.”
The property owners, business owners and workers of Willets Point will collect and dispose of the garbage.
Besides lack of sanitation, Willets Point does not have adequate sewers and there are hundreds of potholes that the City’s Department of Transportation refuses to repair. These conditions have caused the streets to become an eyesore, have made it difficult for the businesses to operate and have endangered people’s lives and property.
On November 13, 2008, the City Council approved a plan that would remove existing businesses from Willets Point and redevelop the 64-acre industrial site into a convention center, hotels, shops and housing to be built and owned by a private developer. The City has announced that it will use eminent domain to achieve possession, if necessary, and then turn the property over to the developer, who is yet to be chosen. Willets Point United Against Eminent Domain Abuse represents more than two dozen property owners who are fighting the City’s plan to acquire their property.

business owners are suppose to hire a company to take their garbage. and from the looks of it, it seems to be their garbage. the city would do more maybe if they kept up with the property. the owners of the land know when they rent out the space their tenants have to keep it clean. thats the problem today the store or business are getting lazy and expects the city to clean up. they should clean it and maybe then the city could fix the sewers and roads. its been a junk yard for a long time and it's about time for change. maybe where ever they move to next they will keep the place in better shape.

Agree with the third poster. Are you supposed to get kudos for maintaining your property? This is expected and they should have done it long ago. If they were so concerned they could have formed a business improvements district and financed the clean up and maintanance of their area just like the business in times square do. In my neighborhood, we clean up the public park. Sure it may be someone else responsibility, but there comes a time where you can lead.
This is nothing but a political stunt.

YES THEY ALL PAY THERE TAXES GO TO THE CITY WEB SITE ALL THE TAXES ARE PAID UP TO DATE on all the land and if there not paying sales tax or some other tax then fuck you for the city not doing there job ...so if they dont pay a sales tax the DOS does'nt pick up the garbage or DOT doesn't pave the roads . bullshit it's just a big land grab its going on for 30 + years and it will be stoped .
