That's strange...when LPC's chief of research Mary Beth Betts first toured our neighborhood with Councilman Avella and several BFHA officers, she seemed to find it very deserving of becoming a municipal historic distict.
Now we have a sudden reversal... a refusal to calendar a public hearing.
Could it have been that since Councilman Avella was seeking one million dollars additional funding for the LPC, at that time, that Ms. Betts was merely buttering him up with the idea of districting Broadway/Flushing and dumping on us afterwards?
This is yet another example of a staff decision from the LPC without it first reaching the eyes of itscommissioners.
#1. The LPC is forever complaining that it has "limited" resources.
#2. Therefore, as the evidence clearly shows, they are to be used mainly in Manhattan's tourist corridor or for pandering to accommodate it's more upscale influential neighborhoods.
#3. They do not want to burden themselves by taking on anything major in Queens like another large district of detached suburban homes...being notoriously biased towards favoring row housing.
Note:After Douglas Manor an LPC spokesperson was overheard mentioning that, "...they would never do that again..."!
#4. Our borough is reserved strictly for token designations like firehouses and public WPA era swimming pools. Sunnyside Gardens got through because it's row housing!
#5. The last time some serious money was offered by the city to the LPC to improve their efficiency, Chairman Tierney declined (I believe it was at a council hearing) saying that, "...they didn't need it..."!
Conclusion:
The LPC is deliberately being kept understaffed by the Bloomberg administration so that they can feel free to capriciously apply their mysterious "criteria" to designate ONLY THOSE already protected neighborhoods that need little protection to begin with.
THAT'S WHY QUEENS IS #4 ON THE LIST of the number of individual landmmarks and historic districts it possesses when compared to the other four boroughs in New York City!
LANDMARKING MIGHT INTERFERE WITH THE OVER DEVELOPMENT AGENDA of Mayor Mike's real estate pals for this area!
Take heed Ms. Manley and the other Community Assistance Unit representatives and REMIND Mayor Bloomberg that there's approximately a 2,000 resident voting block in this area!

But at the very least, you will never have a four- family next door to you. Try being zoned R-4 when all the homes are single family detached and should have been zoned R-2, like on my block.

I wish this neighborhood luck. I've lived to see almost all of "Old Astoria" destroyed within the last 5 years because we could not get landmarked status. These were beautiful buildings, pre-civil war. Garbage now, and some of the new buildings may be left unfinished or as empty lots.
Apparently the Tierney/Betts team at the LPC has decided that there have been "too many inappropriate alterations" on homes in our area since they were last out here, which they feel disqualifies us for historic districting.
NOT SO...ONLY A HAND FULL!
Had those slugs moved faster this would not have happened.
It's all part of their plan folks!
You just keep on being "polite 'n positive" my fellow homeowners while many more homes get "inappropriately altered".

I wish this neighborhood luck. I've lived to see almost all of "Old Astoria" destroyed within the last 5 years because we could not get landmarked status. These were beautiful buildings, pre-civil war. Garbage now, and some of the new buildings may be left unfinished or as empty lots.

Apparently the Tierney/Betts team
at the LPC has decided that there have been "too many inappropriate alterations" on homes in our area since they were last out here, which they feel disqualifies us for historic districting.
NOT SO...ONLY A HAND FULL!
Had those slugs moved faster
this would not have happened.
It's all part of their plan folks!
You just keep on being "polite 'n positive" my fellow homeowners while many more homes get "inappropriately altered".
Then the LPC will find themselves fully justified in restating their original opinion of

And City Planning pulled the same crap. By waiting so long to rezone North Flushing(and I'm sure other areas), they were unable to give certain blocks the downzoning they wanted because too many homes on that block had been converted to multifamily.
