Cracking down on illegal signs not that easy

From the NY Times:

So why doesn’t the city crack down on the companies that put up the signs? It is illegal, after all, to post advertisements on public property in New York, and the companies’ phone numbers are printed on the posters.

But as Ms. Brewer said wryly, “We’ve got a little mystery.”

The problem, according to Ms. Brewer, is that the phone numbers are not for the moving companies, but for what she described as referral agencies, mysterious middlemen who collect customers’ information and pass it along anonymously to legitimate movers.

My neighbor parked his car last week on Maspeth Avenue with a "For Sale" sign in the window.

He received a $45.00 ticket, from a Police Officer in the 104 Pct, not the Traffic Dept.

Blooomberg must be desperate to get money.

Do I guess that means no signs anywhere!!!

They need to post a few signs of their own,"No posting, fine of $xxxx.

While these illegal signs are unsightly, many people are not aware that their amateur advertisement are actually illegal. A crippled friend got hit terribly when he posted signs for a garage sale. He was not aware that he was posting illegally. He actually told me that he could not post on light poles, but could on telephone poles because they were not city property.

If one does not know, or if one follows the law, but the sanitation department does not, fines can be prohibitive.

For anonymous' neighbor that got the summons for having the NO SALE sign in his window:

1. If he was parked legally and had all his registration and inspection stickers and plates legal and up-to-date, he should fight that ticket, because there is NO law against doing that. The sign cannot remain in the window while the car is driven.

2. I am very curious as to what the summons was actually for. I'm sure your neighbor kept a copy. Ask him what the violation was for.

I keep saying that the best way to take these morons on is to set them, call up and "patronize' them and whne they show up say "no thanks." Waste their time!

The signs are a blight, I remove them when I can reach them. Also a problem are billboards on cars, parked intentionally for long periods on major roads, such as the one parked often at Woodhaven and Metropolitan belonging to Royal Collectibles. This too is a blight, and it is illegal.

He tried to fight the ticket - Yes, it a "summonsable offense" to have a "For Sale" sign in your car. His uncle who is a cop, also confirmed this.
My point is, now Bllomberg is desperatly trying to raise funds he is pulling out all the obscure laws on the books, and making cops write tickets for these infractions.

And they can fight to put a lien on your already foreclosed house, attach the bank account that the FDIC is now administering, levy your non-existent pension and wait for the return of Dow 14,000 so they can sell your new penny stocks--formerly blue chip.

So..."anonymous"...what is the number of the law that he violated? It has to be on the ticket!

This is starting to sound like one of those emails: "A friend of mine got a ticket for placing a FOR SALE sign in his car window. His uncle, who is a cop, says it's true."

Soon to be found on Urban Legends.
