Interesting how properties in certain communities are advertised as cash cows and others as places to actually settle down and live in.

The preservation community has decided not only to red line Old Astoria Village (perhaps payback for Steinway houses several decades ago?), but has studiously decided not to get involved and actively undermined any efforts to get moving.
The last time they were dragged there one 'expert' babbled he was involved in the construction industry for 20 years (he was 30 at the time and in the home of a women whose husband was a contractor) and the other simply started swearing at the locals for being so stupid (cute as there were minors present)
That did the ticket!
(Oh yes, no one could give any reason the community should seek landmark designation. No reason to waste resouces on a community of working class ethics that are not part of the frozen chosen)
Yes, Goodwill commissioned Pratt to do a study and rebrand it.
'Old Astoria Village' became 'Two Coves' which sounds like a place in Maine (the intention) and the focus of the study was tweeder programs and people with tweeded needs.
No hint of the historic farbic mentioned.
Nothing. Nada. Bupkis.
And there were dozens of 250, 200, 150 and 100 year old buildings.
The community board said some stellar comments on Sohmer.
Really embassessing for that group (that at least on paper represents our community) with some of their comments. Look it up. Its there in the public record.
Yes, I'm worried about the misuse of the English language. Because half of you YooHoos don't seem to understand the meanings of the fancy words you throw around. Which makes it very difficult to have a conversation here.
Yes, we know all about redlining, where loans were denied to certain neighborhoods based on the color of the people who lived there.
Today, redlining is practiced by the government in denying services to neighborhoods whose residents make less than 6 figures a year. This in turn ghettoizes middle class neighborhoods. Which is exactly how Bloomberg wants it.

Of all the issues in this 'fertile' thread you have selected the one most important to you.
Which gives to the Kreppy Krew some indication of what we have lost by your problem.
Italicized passages and many of the photos come from other websites. The links to these websites are provided within the posts.
Why your neighborhood is full of Queens Crap
"The difference between dishonest and honest graft: for dishonest graft one worked solely for one's own interests, while for honest graft one pursued the interests of one's party, one's state, and one's personal interests all together." - George Washington Plunkitt
The above organizations are recognized by Queens Crap as being beneficial to the city as a whole, by fighting to preserve the history and character of our neighborhoods. They are not connected to this website and the opinions presented here do not necessarily represent the positions of these organizations.

Shame on LoPresto.
Yes! I remember that HDC and LPC walked around the community and 'decided' it was not worth pursueing as a district.
Of course no one local need be invited.
What ever happened to St George parsonage in old astoria?
Well, the preservation community was totally focused on 2 Columbus Circle and some building that NYU threatened (surprise!)
They did nothing. No press. No whimper.
someone must have done a survey or study on the area of OAV?

The church got a Queensmark by Queens Historical Society.

What is the point to Queensmarks?
Branding. You are in QHS territory. Thats all.
isnt this around the corner from where Vallone Sr wants to put in 30 or 40 thousand people on the waterfront?
Yes yes yes
But lets not go there.
The preservation community has certainly done a fine job on educating the public on preservation:

so what happened?
The 1828 community namesake (and John Jacob Astor legacy) got torn down.
Every politican from Maloney on down showed up for the demolition.
It is now a senior warehouse run (I believe) by party boss DAmico's son.
Questions are open as to if a part of cemetary was paved over in the process.
Not the first cemetary paved over in Astoria.
The landmarks commission was notified of another potential site.

wha happened?
A hand scribbled form rejection letter.
We are not Brooklyn Heights you know.
If the community board is against it, LPC will not look at it.

It still passed designation.
This realtor is one of the sleaziest around...an ex-cop too
He's just desparate because Judy Markowitz of Remax usually has most of the houses in the Bayside/Whitestone/Flushing area.
"The preservation community has decided not only to red line Old Astoria Village..."
Ugh. For the millionth time, PLEASE learn the meaning of "red-lining" before you attempt to use it. In this context it is a non sequitur.

Worried about semantics.
!@):"#$#%%&% all the problems facing us.
If half of what you said if true, then the preservation community has some real problems.
This is disgusting.
If these are the kind of people that are supported by the landmarks law then it should be blotted from the books.
We were thinking about landmarking our community but if back stabbing and double crossing homeowners is all they seem to do, I don't know.

That is the point - to discourage the outer boro folks. Go for it!

IF THIS REALLY HAPPENED HE SHOULD HAVE LOST HIS JOB.
DID YOU WRITE A LETTER OF COMPLAINT?
The preservation community has certainly done a fine job on educating the public on preservation:

Certainly explains how they go from Columbia to the Tribune to CAU.
DID YOU WRITE A LETTER OF COMPLAINT?
No, we should have but we are from Queens and are polite.
On highsight, now I know we were stupid.
CB1 the community board from hell!

(not much)
Judy Markowitz...
now she's another sleaze-ball!
I remember an ad she once ran while pregnant which featured her full blown belly stating that she "DELIVERS"... results...I suppose!
A real "klass" act with a capital "K"!
Not to mention her old Humvee plastered with her face and logo, etc. parked in her Flushing home driveway!
