From the NY Observer:The Bloomberg administration has released new details about its planned rezoning of the area surrounding the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, currently noted for the unappealing industrial sites that dominate the neighborhood. Per an environmental review document (PDF) that went up on the Department of City Planning’s Web site yesterday, the city projects that a rezoning will bring about 3,200 new apartments over the next decade to the area, rising in place of warehouses, industrial and commercial sites, and parking lots.
Who in their right mind would want to live along the Gowanus Canal? And why do we continue to destroy manufacturing jobs? And how can we do a massive upzone when we are cutting vital services? As Katia puts it:
If you think that placing 3,200 new residents along the shores of the heavily polluted Gowanus is insanity, you may want to sign the Defend Gowanus (No Love Canal Here) petition.

How is this any different from Queens West and the planned Newtown Creek development? Or those towers along the waterfront in Ravenswood overlooking powerplant smokestacks?

The Gowanus people are from Brooklyn.
