Temporary communities build permanent ones back home

Millions of immigrants from Ecuador and throughout Latin America have headed to the United States in the last few decades in search of the storied American dream. But for many, the dream will be realized only when they return home to the houses they build with money earned in the United States.

The more luxurious ones feature large tinted windows, upper-floor balconies and grand entrances flanked by pillars. Many are half-finished and empty, waiting for their owners up north to earn enough to complete them. Often, it takes years.

Ecuadorean immigrants build dream homes in native land

Murillo noted that not everything is perfect when the immigrants return to Ecuador. Many find their savings quickly evaporate, and work opportunities are sparse.

Some end up returning to the United States, Murillo said. "It's a cycle."

"The United States is like a maximum-security prison," Jadan said. He said many Latinos feel isolated in the United States because of discrimination. "Here in my country, we are in paradise."

Basically, they build a variation of Queens Crap on a hillside and call it a mansion.

Hm. I predict you're going to get some noise on that last comment.

I wonder if they deal with a lot of jealousy from their impoverished neighbors.

The irony is: the indigenous-dominated, redistributionist Ecuadorian government may well cast a hungry eye on the fruits of their migrants' labor, especially in light of the decline in oil prices. There, land is confiscated and doled out to both developers and poor Indian farmers.

What the hell is that in front of the house? That looks like a soccer goal!

Obiously not the sharpest knives in the box, these Ecuadorians, if they're putting the soccer goal right in front of the house! Must have plenty of Yankee Dollars to replace all the broken windows!

Unfortunately, a good portion of immigrants wages received in the US wind up in thier home countries. These immigrants do not feel a need to invest in the US. Many see working in the US as a temporary stay, in order to eventually return to their home countries. It is hard to feel sorry for immigrants who do not make a commitment to the US by staying and investing in the US, but rather wiring their income to the home country that did nothing for them.

Queens Crap is a racist... Everything would of been fine and dandy with this story if it were about some type of White immigrants.... It's evident Queens Crap is one of the ignorant type that never left the country or.................. I expect this comment to be erased by the Crapper.

I don't see how a country that doesn't offer any opportunity to provide for one's family can be considered a "paradise".

In all actuality your "paradise" is really a third world dump whose native citizens would literally drop dead one by one of starvation and disease if it weren't for the United States of America.

Hey "Better NYC".... Not to long ago the same thing could of been said about most of Europe

Anonymous said...

More proof that thanks to Bloomberg's sanctuary city policies, NYC is becoming a collection of temporary communities. It doesn't matter what color the temps are.

WHITE POWER!!!!

Queens Crapper said...

Please ignore the white power and New York comments. These are left by my friend from LIQ Shitty who is trying to prove that the blog is racist.

Unknown said...

Why ignore my comment? I'm I not making any sense?

Unknown said...

Hey Queens Crapper... Do you believe in Freedom of Speech? We live in America not Venezuela or Iran.

Queens Crapper said...

No, as usual, you're not. The story is not about white immigrants. It's about Ecuadorean immigrants. So you are commenting about something that doesn't exist.

Queens Crapper said...

I do believe in freedom of speech. I also believe in the freedom to ignore others' speech.

Unknown said...

Be careful with what you post or i'll make sure your blog gets canceled.

Queens Crapper said...

Oh well then I guess you don't believe in freedom of speech. Like to threaten, though, don't you?

As long as your not spreading hate.

Queens Crapper said...

You seem to be the one who came here a-hatin'.

on who?

On Caucasion people. You friggin idiot, walking abortion.

The only way you can have a thriving community (as opposed to a diverse! vibrant! slum) is for local people to spend their money locally, not view it as a strip mine to take the wealth and send it somewhere else.

That is a third world country. That is the hills of Kentucky.

This should not be Queens.

We should have poliicies to attract owner occupied buildings and stable populations with a long term vested interest in their communities.

I know of a hell of a lot of immigrants. They think the politicans are jerks and do not believe a word they say. Almost all want to move to a better place - away from Queens.

The politicans (as represented by our friend 'New York' here) dont want that.

The reason why many immigrants retire in their native countries is due to the cost of living being so low opposed to the United States. Their hard earned dollars go way farther back home. I've been very fortunate to have worked around the world. One thing is that i've noticed is many White Americans retire overseas for the same reason these immigrants do.

Unknown said...

If you cross the San Diego/ Tijuana border crossing and you drive 20 minutes south you will find many gated communities that cater to retired Americans which are mostly filled with "Whites". One time I crossed the border by foot and I met a fellow New Yorker(Brooklyn Native) that had retired and moved to Mexico because the cost of living was so low. He was crossing the border back into the States to go shopping in the mall.

Unknown said...

I've met retired White Americans living in several 3rd world countries. Example: Phillipines, Thailand, Romania, Panama, Dominican Republic, Mexico. They claim their Social Security checks go way further in those countries.

Anonymous said...

Yes, of course the American dollar travels farther in other countries. Pointing to retired Americans really does nothing for your argument. We are talking about illegals who aren't supposed to be here in the first place and are eating up our services.

I guess New York, like his namesake, approves of illegal immigration.

I guess New York, like his namesake, approves of illegal immigration.

Of course he does! As an appratchik of the Democratic party, "New York's" job is to flood the U.S. with millions of illegal aliens...oh...excuse me, how "racist" of me......"undocumented guest workers", and eventually "fast track" them on the road to citizenship. Then the plan is to sign 'em up on the voter rolls as members of the Democratic Party.

After that, let the tweeding begin!

Anyone who disagrees with him, or provides evidence of his nerfarious scheme, he simply yells: "RACISM!" to shut you up.

SOUNDS LIKE BIGGIE OR BIGGIE # 2

Unknown said...

Not all of these immigrants are in this country illegally. I don't approve of illegal migration. What I don't approve is the amount of ignorance that exist in our American society. It's hard for many of you guys to believe but globalization is everywhere not only the U.S. If you travel throughh many airports in Europe you will notice many non- white workers. Especially in Frankurt, Paris and Amsterdam which most of the workers where non white.

Queens Crapper said...

Exact quote from the article:

"Many of the migrants go to the United States illegally because visas are difficult to obtain."

Unknown said...

Globalization could be traced back to when all these Europeans moved to the Americas. These same people(unfortunately part of my ancestry) then claimed to have discovered this land which already had people living on it. You guys have to think out of your little close minded boxes and look at the ignorance of this.

Unknown said...

Many doesn't mean all

Queens Crapper said...

Many means many. A lot. I don't want to pay for someone's emergency room visit if they are here illegally. Comprende?

Unknown said...

I've received much animosity from Europeans and Australians for being an American due to the stereotypical American having the same mindset as you guys.

Anonymous said...

We really don't care if you've received animosity or what people from other countries think of us.

Unknown said...

Growing up in Queens i've never encountered White Trash.... But I didn't know at the time that we ad those types mainly in neighborhoods like Ridegewood, Middle Village, Maspeth, etc. Most of yuo guys have something in common which is a lack of a education.

Anonymous said...

What is there not educated about what has been said? You agreed that illegal immigration is wrong.

Unknown said...

When I say "You Guys" i'm refering to most(not all) of the people that have commented on this post.

Queens Crapper said...

Pardon me, you started off your long string of comments with "Queens Crap is a racist."

Point to one racist thing I have said.

Unknown said...

I apologize from my "White Trash" comment. I guess that is a ignorant thing to say on my part.

Unknown said...

My family came here planning to stay here. They learned the language and worked hard. Our family is still all here! Never wanting to go back. Thats the difference.

I have no problem with people coming here but only if you plan to stay!

Unknown said...

Queens Crapper.... You are constantly targeting the Latino community wit negative comments. You must not realize that Latinos are part of your community as well.

It's hard for many of you guys to believe but globalization is everywhere not only the U.S.

Wow! Tell us something we don't already know!

Wade Nichols is an avid reader, and spends much of his free time reading on various topics. He can't stand being on the subway without a book, mainly because he doesn't like staring at the hoi polloi.

His current read is Thomas Friedman's The World Is Flat. His last read was Niall Ferguson's The Ascent of Money. A while ago he read Harm de Blij's The Power of Place.

What would you like to know about globalization?

What I don't approve is the amount of ignorance that exist in our American society.

Why don't you simply say what you really mean - you don't approve of the levels of ignorance that you PERCEIVE to exist in WHITE Americans.

If you were really against ignorance in a general sense, you would be ardently opposed to ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. Illegal immigrants are not exactly the types of people that score 1400 on the SAT, read Shakespeare, work for NASA, or work as quantitative analysts for hedge funds.

I don't think anyone on this blog would be opposed to a system similar to the Canadian immigration system that scores immigrants based on: income, education, business experience, etc.

But allowing a bunch of peasants with 6th grade education levels into the U.S. isn't helping this country compete against China and India. It's simply setting the stage for a country with a few people that own 99% of the wealth, and everyone else that owns nothing. Something like most South American countries. ¿Comprende?

Globalization could be traced back to when all these Europeans moved to the Americas.

Globalization goes back even further then that, to when a band of our intrepid African ancestors decided to leave Africa for Europe, Asia, and elsewhere. I'm glad my ancestors left Africa for greener pastures. I hope some day that humans colonize outer space as well.

I've received much animosity from Europeans and Australians for being an American due to the stereotypical American having the same mindset as you guys.

If you measure your personal worth as a person by what a bunch of Euro-weenies say about Americans, then you need to reassess your priorities in life.

Wade Nichols has dealt with these same pedantic Euro-weenies in his travels abroad. Stand your ground, and don't take their crap. They are more guilty of stereotyping then anything you'll read written on this board.

If they persist in their pseudo-Marxist drivel, simply throw the stereotypes back in their faces. Tell a European male that we Americans have a stereotype of them being a bunch of bisexuals, and ask him how many men he's had sex with - that will shut them up!

Most of yuo [sic] guys have something in common which is a lack of a education.

You're playing with dynamite here. If you want a further intellectual bitch slapping, just keep up your crap!

It's not my fault that the vast majority of illegals are Latino.

I am an equal opportunity negative commenter. You do something stupid, wrong or illegal, rest assured I will comment on it regardless of your race.

May I also add that the Latino community is one of my greatest sources of material. The immigrants that plan to stay do not like overdevelopment any more than the natives do.

LibertyBoyNYC said...

My wife is an Ecuadorian national, and a naturalized citizen of the United States of America.

I can say that Crapper's points are very accurate. There are close family members who work as, say, payphone repair people, and they happen to own 5- or 6- story office buildings back in Ecuadorian cities. These are legal immigrants, understand. Most legal immmigrants who go down this path end up staying in America permanently, because they become accustomed to the general lifestyle of prosperity.

When these Ecuadorian immigrants say their country of origin is a paradise, most [allow the generalization] speak in terms of the natural endowment of undeveloped [non-crapped] pastoral beauty, the temperate climate in the mountains ["La Sierra"], and the slow and unhurried lifestyle. But there is little prosperity to speak of. Life is a constant chore. So they stay here.

I believe this is very true. People are afraid of change. It is so funny how we never look at the "root" of the "problem." Who here has stated that the United States government "dollarized" the Ecuadorian economy?? THE OFFICIAL CURRENCY OF ECUADOR IS THE U.S. DOLLAR. Ever since "dollarization" was implemented over 1 million Ecuadorians have left Ecuador - mainly to the U.S. and Western Europe. The U.S. dollarized Ecuador, placed a U.S. base in Ecuador, and coerced Ecuador out of OPEC. Any wonder why Ecuadorians come here to work and send remittances back home? Simple, U.S. capitalism at any cost! YOU CAN NOT HAVE THE CHEAP RESOURCES FROM A NATION WITHOUT RECEIVING PEOPLE FROM THE HOST (ECUADOR) NATION. JUST LIKE YOU LOVE YOUR CHEAP ELECTRONICS FROM MEXICO HUH?? LOOK AT NAFTA - THEY ARE HERE TO RECLAIM WHAT U.S. CAPITALISTS RAPED FROM THEIR RESPECTIVE COUNTRIES.

Of course they are not thinking of setting permanent roots in the USA. How could they? Unlike older generations there's no real legal process to become an American. Unlike older generations they face mass deportations. There's always been hostility to immigrants, but the system we have in place is nothing like the past.

------------

Who is going to deport them? Landlords? Employers? Tweeding politicos?

The system we have is nothing like before 1965 or examples of mass xenophobia like the Chinese Exclusion Act and the like.

Racism today is a pale reflection of even a generation ago. That is good.

Tweeding politicans think the Lower East Side is still around right here in Queens. They don't realize that immigrants are for the most part, not stupid people but pretty much like everyone else.

They will take the clubhouse handouts - then move on to a better place to live and raise their kids.

And as often as not, it ain't Queens.

The issue is not people beating up immigrants. This is rare despite the media going apeshit when it happens.

By way of contrast, when another immigrant gets killed on a construction site because he is given substandard training the press is silent.

In our opinion, these are two sides of the same coin

Rather then gangs of roving skinheads, most immigrant conflict today are fairly small things: newcomers not conforming to cultural mores of this country (noise, smells, treatment of women, etc)

thanks, ridgewoodian, for the insight.
