Industry moving to Queens to service film studios

Both Suna and Rosenbluth said they have had to turn away productions because their studios are all booked. And both operations are planning expansions to add studio space.

The industry has also provided a shot in the arm to businesses that service production companies - everything from restaurants to paint stores.

"When the movie production studios are busy, we benefit from it," said Charles Sommer, president of Public Service Truck Renting in Long Island City.

Matt Dienstag, principal of Lenoble Lumber, said his company recently moved its headquarters from Manhattan to Long Island City to better service the industry.

"Having a thriving film and television industry is really important - not only to Queens, but for all of the city," he said.

Lights, camera, more action at city studios

Wow, who would have thought that industry would be moving back to Queens? I guess the tax incentives didn't hurt. Maybe this should have been the focus instead of tax breaks to millionaire developers to provide us with luxury condos that we don't need.

As usual, Crapper's logic makes no sense. The entertainment industry is thriving in NYC and Queens, so we shouldn't allow tax abatements for residential construction - ???

Why should we allow it? It's not the type of construction we need. It's not helping the common guy that thousands of yuppies are flooding into new housing units. We need housing for people who don't make 6 figures a year. Keep the abatements for people who build that kind of housing and for people who create JOBS. As we see from our current situation, jobs are needed more than luxury condos.

Please go study economics and finance, then come back with your opinions on tax policy and economic activity. I love when people who have no clue think they are experts on everything.

Why don't you just not come here if the opinions bother you so much? I love when jerkoffs try to tell other people to shut up.

I'm honestly wondering how the Crapper feels about the Silvercup project plans, which is intimately tied to the burdgeoning entertainment industry...haven't heard about Silvercup in a while, I know their plans were for a monster complex just off the QBB.

Not setting anyone up here, just curious to see how people feel.

They are all fleeing California like rats in a sinking ship.
...Cant get home insurence and to much crime.
Too add many of the movies are shot in Canada to avoid unions and hassles.
"Battle of Seattle" was shot in Vancouver with exception of the fight scene with 200 locals a unpaid extras.
(They got some really cool jackets and got to pose with Charlize)

PS:
I didnt know she was African, talks like a NYC truck driver ?

Still waiting for a rational explanation for why overdeveloping in LIC is a wise move, especially since transportation, utility infrastructure, schools, libraries, hospitals, etc. have not been upgraded or expanded first.

Wrong, only the first five stories of the 3 or 4 40 story buildings have anything to do with film productions.

The rest of it is a Suna land grab where they are expecting to make money off of shorehorning thousands of people on that tiny site.

The community will see blank walls and entrance to parking garages.

This is a brownfield. FEMA has this area as prone to flooding in even a moderate hurricane.

One of your closest fire houses is closed.

The area is soon to be teaming with section 8 hotels, you are right next to the largest housing project in the world, if not the country, facing the noisy Queenboro Bridge, two of your nearest three hospitals have closed, and your waterfront will be all of 40 feet.

You have dozens of major highrises built all serviced by one two lane road.

You have to be nuts.

yes, turn off you mind and let the logic of city planning and clubhouse hacks do your thinking.

I think the Silvercup fiasco has been shelved. The designer backed out due to lack of funds. I think they scrapped it due to the broken promises of the NYS Power Authority not taking down the new electrical power generator that will cause too much vibration to the sound stages. That was key for the go ahead initially and since they now are not taking it down due to the power requirements of Queens West and all the shiny new stainless steel appliances packed to the gills in there.

How green!
