Fix that flag!

The property that Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood sits on has some nice old shade trees.
It's flag, in this condition for several weeks now, could use some mending, however.

This is a deliberate disgrace!

Fix this flag or lower it!

It's not a surprise to me. Our public institutions have little respect for the people they represent. Our flag is a symbol of our nation and all it's people.
At it's best it is neglect. And at it's worst it is contempt.

It's supposed to be taken down every evening.

Take it down, and destroy it in a proper manner (burn it, no pictures allowed of the burning).

Put up a new one, and take it down every evening.

Anyone who's been in the Boy Scouts knows these simple facts.

Wade, you must be an old timer.

Around 1972 or so they passed a law permitting the flag to be flown at night as long as a spotlight is on it.

You must remember 1972?

Old enough to be considered an "old fart" by most people on this blog, which probably includes you, Hell Gate Kid. But young enough that I'm still considered a "kid" by those 60 and over.

You are correct, here's the exact words from the "Flag Code":

§6. Time and occasions for display
It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

I doubt that they use spotlights in the night on that flag in the picture.

Not much really, I was quite young then. But I'm technically old enough to have gone to "Woodstock" if you're trying to be clever and find out how old I really am.
