Amazing HipHop music from Hollis. When I was growing up (50s) Hollis was much more a Bing Crosby, Rosmary Clooney, Elvis Presly and Pat Boone neighborhood.
Let's see... family togetherness... returning lost money... I don't think these are values espoused by hiphoppers today in their music.
Is that you trying to argue that hip-hop today is not creative and fun?
How 'bout you focus those same standards on whatever you listen to these days. Alt rock, pop, what have you... I doubt many of them dwell too long on "family togetherness" and "returning lost money."
No, that wasn't me arguing that point. I was saying that rap music used to be socially conscious. Now it's been taken over by those singing about banging ho's and shooting each other and the artists going out and doing exactly what they sing about.
The sunglasses salesmen and self-promotion machines may not be creating socially conscious rap. But it does exist. You just have to know where to look.
Back when, you didn't have to "know where to look" - that type of music was popular. Fresh Prince, Run DMC, MC Hammer, even Tone Loc was at least funny if not socially conscious. Now what's popular is slapping your ho around, wearing gang colors and showing off your bling, one or all of which may get you shot.
Ah, I see... you like your negroes "sanitized." Surprised you don't cite Vanilla Ice as popular late-80s rap.
Don't forget NWA was around back then, too. And they were pretty popular. Can't remember early gangsta rap? Maybe you were just as blindered then as you are now...
Nope, don't like my "negroes sanitized" - what racist nonsense. We are talking about the devolution of rap music. If you found NWA's message "fun", then fine. Funny how Leroy Comrie wants to ban the N-word, and that band made a living off it.
Having spent time in prison is a badge of honor for today's rappers. Even the women go to the joint to develop street cred. And the kids emulate these morons. So sad.
Queen Latifah is the most popular female rapper of all time and I think a good role model. But look at what's out there today...Foxy Brown, L'il Kim...yikes! What happened to Lauryn Hill?
